Indian Markets Recover After a Cautious Opening
Investors began Friday's trading session cautiously as global market weakness raised concerns about the possible impact on Indian equities. However, buying interest in heavyweight stocks helped the domestic benchmark indices recover and move into positive territory.
The Sensex opened at 79,413.66, while the Nifty 50 began the session at 24,538.20. Both indices subsequently moved higher as investors purchased selected large-cap stocks.
According to market reports, the Sensex gained more than 500 points during morning trade. The Nifty also crossed the 24,600 mark, indicating resilience in the domestic market despite pressure from overseas developments.
Global AI Sell-Off Raises Market Concerns
Global equity markets witnessed significant selling pressure following a sharp decline in artificial intelligence-related and semiconductor stocks. Concerns about tighter regulation of the artificial intelligence sector in the United States contributed to uncertainty among investors.
The political development followed the Democratic Party's victory in the US midterm elections, which changed the balance of power in Congress. Investors became concerned that a stronger push for AI regulation could affect the pace of investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure.
On Wall Street, technology-heavy stocks recorded substantial losses. The Nasdaq Composite declined sharply, while the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average also ended lower. Semiconductor companies were among the major contributors to the global market decline.
Asian markets followed the negative trend. Japan's Nikkei 225 and South Korea's Kospi recorded steep losses, reflecting investor concerns over technology stocks and the outlook for the AI industry.
Heavyweight Stocks Support Sensex and Nifty
Despite the global sell-off, selected heavyweight stocks helped Indian benchmark indices remain positive. Shares of Mahindra and Mahindra recorded strong gains during morning trade, while Titan, Infosys, HCL Technologies, Tata Consultancy Services and Bharti Airtel also advanced.
Buying in information technology stocks was particularly notable, as some Indian technology companies benefited from the reassessment of global investment trends. However, not all sectors participated in the recovery.
Asian Paints, Bajaj Finance and Power Grid were among the stocks that faced selling pressure during the session. The mixed performance indicated that investors were selectively buying shares rather than participating in a broad-based market rally.
Midcap and Smallcap Stocks Face Pressure
While the Sensex and Nifty traded higher, broader market indices showed weakness. Midcap and smallcap shares faced selling pressure, suggesting that the recovery was concentrated in selected large-cap stocks.
Market breadth also remained negative during the morning session, with declining shares outnumbering advancing shares on the National Stock Exchange.
The India VIX, which measures expected market volatility, also moved higher. An increase in the volatility index indicates greater uncertainty among market participants and reflects the cautious approach adopted by investors.
Foreign Investor Buying Supports Domestic Equities
Renewed foreign institutional investor interest has been another factor supporting Indian equities. Foreign investors made substantial purchases in Indian shares in recent trading sessions, helping improve market sentiment.
Lower crude oil prices in the preceding sessions and expectations of continued corporate earnings growth also supported investor confidence. These factors helped domestic markets withstand some of the pressure emerging from global technology stocks.
However, fluctuations in crude oil prices, foreign fund flows and international market sentiment remain important factors that could influence trading in the coming sessions.
What Investors Are Watching
Investors are closely monitoring global technology stocks, developments in US policy towards artificial intelligence, crude oil prices and foreign institutional investment activity.
The recovery in the Sensex and Nifty on November 6 highlights the relative resilience of Indian benchmark indices during a period of global uncertainty. However, weakness in broader market shares and rising volatility suggest that caution remains necessary.
Market participants will continue to track corporate earnings, sector-specific developments and international economic signals to assess the direction of Indian equities in the coming sessions.
