India’s aluminium industry is poised for sustained growth as the government continues to prioritise infrastructure development and power sector expansion, according to National Aluminium Company Ltd Chairman and Managing Director Brijendra Pratap Singh. He expressed confidence that the upcoming Union Budget will maintain strong capital expenditure in these areas, supporting steady domestic demand for aluminium in the coming years.
Aluminium plays a critical role in infrastructure projects due to its durability, lightweight properties, and resistance to corrosion. It is widely used in construction, transportation, power transmission, and renewable energy installations. With the government investing heavily in highways, rail networks, airports, and urban infrastructure, industry leaders believe aluminium consumption will continue to rise.
Singh highlighted that the power sector, particularly transmission and distribution networks, is a major driver of aluminium demand. Expansion of the national power grid, integration of renewable energy, and electrification initiatives require large volumes of aluminium conductors and components. As India works towards improving energy access and reliability, demand from this segment is expected to remain strong.
The government’s capital expenditure-led growth strategy has been a key feature of recent budgets. Continued focus on infrastructure spending is seen as essential not only for economic development but also for generating employment and strengthening supply chains. Industry stakeholders are optimistic that the forthcoming budget will reinforce this approach, providing long-term visibility for core sectors such as metals and manufacturing.
In addition to infrastructure, aluminium demand is also supported by growth in electric vehicles, renewable energy, and consumer durables. The shift towards clean energy and sustainable transportation has increased the use of aluminium in solar panels, wind turbines, and electric vehicle components. These emerging sectors are expected to complement traditional demand from construction and power projects.
NALCO, as one of India’s leading aluminium producers, is aligning its strategy with these trends. The company continues to focus on improving operational efficiency, increasing value-added products, and supporting domestic supply requirements. Singh noted that a stable policy environment and consistent government investment are crucial for maintaining competitiveness in the global market.
Despite global uncertainties and price fluctuations, the domestic market remains a key strength for the Indian aluminium industry. Rising urbanisation, industrial growth, and infrastructure modernisation are expected to sustain demand over the medium to long term.
As Budget discussions gain momentum, industry participants will closely watch announcements related to capital expenditure, energy transition, and manufacturing incentives. A continued infrastructure push is likely to reinforce India’s aluminium demand outlook, providing growth opportunities for producers while supporting the country’s broader economic development goals.
