Paramount Skydance Completes Warner Bros Discovery Takeover in 110 Billion Dollar Deal

The combined company now controls major film studios, television businesses, streaming platforms, sports properties, news organisations and a large collection of globally recognised entertainment franchises.

Paramount Skydance has completed its acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery, creating a major new force in the global entertainment industry. The transaction, valued at approximately 110 billion dollars including debt, brings together two of Hollywood’s most recognisable media businesses under a new corporate structure called Skydance Corporation.

The deal officially closed on October 6, 2026, following regulatory approvals and the completion of other required conditions. Paramount Skydance had agreed to acquire Warner Bros Discovery for 31 dollars in cash per share, with the overall transaction valued at about 81 billion dollars excluding debt and approximately 110 billion dollars when debt is included.

The merger significantly expands the scale of Skydance. The combined company now controls major film studios, television businesses, streaming platforms, sports properties, news organisations and a large collection of globally recognised entertainment franchises. The company will be led by David Ellison as chief executive, with Ynon Kreiz serving as co chief executive.

One of the biggest attractions of the deal is the collection of intellectual property that now sits under the same corporate umbrella. The combined portfolio includes Warner Bros franchises such as Harry Potter, DC properties including Batman and Superman, and Game of Thrones. Paramount brings major franchises including Mission Impossible, Star Trek, Top Gun and Transformers.

The combination also brings together two major streaming businesses. HBO Max and Paramount Plus are now part of the same corporate group. The company also has Discovery Plus and Pluto TV, giving Skydance a broad range of streaming services and content libraries.

The merger is significant because streaming has changed the traditional Hollywood business model. Film studios and television networks are facing pressure from changing viewing habits, declining traditional cable television audiences and the high cost of producing and distributing content. The combination gives Skydance a larger library of films and television programmes and a broader customer base for its streaming operations.

The company has said the merger will help it build a next generation global media and entertainment business. Its strategy includes increasing content production, improving the use of technology and creating greater opportunities to distribute entertainment across different platforms.

According to the company, the combined business is expected to deliver at least 30 theatrical films each year, along with more than 180 television shows and series. Skydance has also set a target of achieving at least 6 billion dollars in run rate synergies within three years.

For movie audiences, the most visible impact could come from the combination of the two companies’ film libraries and franchises. Harry Potter, Mission Impossible, Superman, Batman, Star Trek, Top Gun and several other major properties will now sit within the same corporate group.

However, the merger does not mean that all these franchises will immediately be combined into single productions or that every film and television programme will move to one streaming platform. Decisions about future releases, production schedules, licensing arrangements and streaming distribution will depend on the company’s business strategy.

The merger also creates a much larger news and television operation. CBS News and CNN are now part of the same overall corporate group, alongside CBS, HBO and several cable networks. This gives Skydance a substantial presence not only in entertainment but also in news, sports and television programming.

Another major part of the transaction is the company’s streaming strategy. Having multiple streaming platforms gives Skydance access to a large amount of content and millions of potential subscribers. Industry observers will now watch whether the company eventually combines some of its streaming services or continues to operate them separately.

The deal also comes with significant financial challenges. The combined company carries a substantial debt burden following the transaction. Analysts have pointed to the need for Skydance to manage debt while continuing to invest in films, television, streaming and technology. The company therefore faces pressure to achieve the expected cost savings and revenue growth from the merger.

The new company will also face strong competition from major entertainment and technology companies. Netflix, Disney, Amazon, Apple and other large businesses are competing for viewers, subscribers, advertising revenue and premium entertainment content. Skydance will need to use its large franchise portfolio and expanded distribution network to compete effectively in this environment.

The transaction is also notable because Skydance itself is a relatively young Hollywood studio compared with Warner Bros and Paramount. Skydance was founded by David Ellison in 2010 and initially became known for producing and financing major films before expanding into television, animation and interactive entertainment.

The Warner Bros Discovery acquisition represents a major transformation for the company. Instead of operating primarily as a smaller production-focused studio, Skydance now controls two major Hollywood film studios and a much broader media portfolio.

Warner Bros Discovery shareholders received cash under the terms of the transaction, and Warner Bros Discovery shares stopped trading on Nasdaq after the merger was completed. Shares of the newly combined Skydance Corporation began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol SKYD.

For consumers, the immediate impact may not be visible in everyday viewing. Existing films and television shows will continue to follow their respective release and licensing arrangements. However, over time, the merger could influence where major franchises are released, how streaming services are packaged and how new films and television projects are developed.

The deal therefore represents more than a simple corporate acquisition. It brings together some of the biggest names in Hollywood entertainment, television, streaming and news under one organisation. The combination of Warner Bros and Paramount gives Skydance access to a huge content library and several globally recognised franchises.

The success of the merger will ultimately depend on how effectively the company integrates the two businesses, manages its debt, achieves planned cost savings and maintains investment in new content. It will also have to respond to rapidly changing consumer behaviour and competition from streaming and technology companies.

With the transaction now complete, the entertainment industry is entering a new phase in which Skydance will compete on a much larger scale. The company’s ability to turn its extensive collection of franchises, studios, streaming platforms and television networks into sustainable growth will be closely watched across Hollywood and global media markets.
