India has faced a significant increase in fossil fuel import costs following a sharp rise in global energy prices between March and August 2026. An analysis by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air has estimated that the country incurred around $22 billion in additional gross fossil fuel import costs during the six-month period.
The increase in import costs was linked to the global energy price shock that followed disruptions to energy supplies around the Strait of Hormuz. The developments placed additional pressure on countries that depend heavily on imported crude oil, petroleum products and liquefied natural gas.
India was among the major importers affected by the increase in international energy prices. According to the CREA analysis, India recorded an estimated additional net crude oil cost of $20.5 billion between March and August. This represented a substantial increase in the amount paid for crude compared with prices that had been anticipated in futures markets before the disruption.
The impact becomes clearer when the wider fossil fuel basket is considered. CREA estimated India’s net additional cost across fossil fuels at $14.4 billion after accounting for relevant import and trade effects. This was equivalent to around 0.38 percent of the country’s gross domestic product, or approximately 1.4 days of national income.
The figures highlight the vulnerability of major energy-importing economies to sudden movements in global commodity prices. When crude oil and other energy products become more expensive, the impact can spread across several parts of an economy. Higher import bills can influence transportation costs, industrial expenses, inflation and government finances.
The global impact was considerably larger. Fossil fuel importers collectively paid an estimated $330 billion more for seaborne crude oil, petroleum products and liquefied natural gas during the six months than what markets had expected before the energy shock.
Crude oil accounted for the largest portion of the additional global cost. According to the CREA analysis, crude oil represented about $164 billion of the additional amount. Diesel and gasoil accounted for approximately $74 billion, while gasoline added around $36 billion. Liquefied natural gas and jet fuel also contributed substantially to the higher import bill.
India’s exposure is particularly important because crude oil remains a critical component of the country’s energy system. Higher international crude prices can increase the cost of imported energy even when domestic consumption patterns remain relatively stable.
The situation also highlights the importance of energy diversification and reducing exposure to sudden international price movements. India has been expanding renewable energy capacity and encouraging alternative sources of power, while continuing to rely heavily on conventional fuels to meet its growing energy demand.
The energy shock has also encouraged several countries to examine their dependence on imported fossil fuels. The disruption has reinforced the economic importance of renewable energy, energy efficiency, domestic production and strategic reserves.
For India, a prolonged period of high energy prices could have wider implications. Petroleum products are closely connected to transportation and logistics, while natural gas is used across industries and other sectors. Changes in international prices can therefore affect businesses as well as consumers.
The additional import cost also has implications for India’s external balance. A higher energy import bill means more foreign exchange is required to purchase the same quantity of fuel. This can add pressure to the country’s trade balance when energy prices remain elevated for an extended period.
However, the impact of global oil price increases does not automatically translate into an equivalent increase in domestic fuel prices. Domestic pricing is influenced by several factors, including taxes, refining margins, currency movements, government policies and international market conditions.
The CREA report provides an estimate of the additional costs created by the energy shock rather than a direct calculation of India’s entire annual fossil fuel import bill. The comparison is based on the difference between actual market prices and the prices that futures markets had anticipated before the disruption.
The findings therefore provide an indication of the financial burden created by the unexpected price increase. They also demonstrate how geopolitical disruptions can quickly translate into higher costs for economies located far from the immediate source of the crisis.
Globally, the additional $330 billion burden on fossil fuel importers illustrates the scale of the shock. China recorded a larger additional cost than India, while the European Union also faced a substantial increase in energy import expenditure.
For India, the latest figures underline the need for continued efforts to improve energy security. Expanding renewable energy, strengthening domestic energy infrastructure, improving efficiency and maintaining adequate strategic reserves could help reduce vulnerability to future international energy shocks.
The experience also demonstrates the importance of diversifying energy suppliers and supply routes. A wider range of sources can provide greater flexibility when geopolitical tensions disrupt a particular region or transportation corridor.
India’s energy demand is expected to remain significant as the economy grows and industrial activity expands. Managing the balance between economic growth, affordable energy and long-term energy security will therefore remain an important policy challenge.
The latest CREA assessment shows that sudden global energy disruptions can impose substantial costs even on large and diversified economies. For India, the estimated $22 billion additional fossil fuel import burden is a reminder of the economic importance of reducing excessive exposure to international fossil fuel price volatility.
