The Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India, Tuhin Kanta Pandey, has reiterated that market integrity and investor protection remain the highest priorities for the regulator, even as efforts continue to expand participation and innovation in India’s financial markets.
Speaking at the ET NOW Markets Summit 2026, the SEBI Chairman emphasised that enabling broader access to financial markets and encouraging participation from new investors cannot come at the cost of weakening safeguards that ensure transparency and fairness. He noted that a well regulated market is essential for long term investor confidence and sustainable economic growth.
The remarks come at a time when India’s capital markets are witnessing increased participation from retail investors, along with rapid growth in digital trading platforms and financial technology services. While this expansion has improved accessibility, it has also brought new regulatory challenges, including the need to monitor market practices, protect investors from fraud, and ensure compliance with established norms.
The SEBI Chairman highlighted that trust is the foundation of any financial market. Without strong safeguards, investor participation can become vulnerable to misinformation, manipulation and unfair practices. He reiterated that regulatory frameworks are continuously being strengthened to address emerging risks while maintaining ease of access for genuine investors.
Market experts have noted that India’s financial ecosystem has evolved significantly in recent years, with increased participation from small investors and growing interest in equity markets. This trend has contributed to greater liquidity and depth in the markets, but it also requires enhanced vigilance from regulators.
SEBI has introduced several measures in recent years aimed at improving transparency, strengthening disclosure norms and enhancing surveillance systems. These steps are designed to ensure that market participants operate within a fair and regulated environment while maintaining confidence among investors.
During his address, the SEBI Chairman also underscored the importance of balancing innovation with regulation. As financial products and trading technologies continue to evolve, regulatory frameworks must adapt to ensure that new developments do not compromise investor safety.
He further highlighted the role of education and awareness in protecting investors. According to him, informed investors are better equipped to make sound financial decisions and avoid risks associated with speculative or unregulated activities.
The ET NOW Markets Summit 2026 brought together key stakeholders from the financial sector, including policymakers, regulators, market participants and industry experts. Discussions at the summit focused on the future of India’s capital markets, regulatory developments and the role of technology in shaping financial services.
The SEBI Chairman’s remarks reflect the regulator’s continued commitment to maintaining a stable, transparent and efficient market ecosystem. As India’s financial markets continue to expand, regulatory oversight is expected to remain a key focus area to ensure long term stability and investor confidence.
Overall, the address reinforced the message that while market development is important, it must always operate within a framework that prioritises integrity, transparency and investor protection.
