In Tamil Nadu, the distribution of school uniforms for first-grade students in government and government-aided schools has faced a delay of seven months. The delay has led to a situation where parents have been forced to buy ready-made uniforms from local shops, at prices ranging from ₹200 to ₹400, due to the lack of uniforms being provided by the government.
The Tamil Nadu Textiles Corporation is responsible for procuring the cloth for these uniforms, which are then distributed by a government-approved society. The delay has been attributed to a few procedural bottlenecks. According to the official information, the government typically supplies free uniforms to students from 1st to 8th grade under a state-sponsored scheme.
However, this year, the distribution of uniforms for first-grade students has been delayed. While uniforms for other classes have already been distributed, first-grade students have had to wait longer, and the parents have voiced their concerns about the delay. Teachers and parents have reported that the delay has created financial stress for many families, as they are now purchasing uniforms at local stores at a higher price.
The Social Welfare Department has stated that the delay is primarily due to the time required for measuring the first-grade students and preparing the uniforms. In previous years, uniform sizes for first-grade students were determined based on the measurements of older students. However, this year, there was a need for new measurements to be taken, which caused additional delays.
Additionally, student enrollment continues till Saraswati Puja, and the distribution of the Education Management Information System (EMIS) numbers was delayed until November. This further postponed the process of uniform allocation.
The department also explained that the delay in procuring fabric from the Tamil Nadu Textile Corporation contributed to the setback. Despite these challenges, they have committed to completing the distribution process by January 25. In the meantime, the Social Welfare Department has started working on measuring students for uniforms from December to speed up the process.
The government has undertaken significant efforts to address the issue, with nearly 2.83 lakh students across the state expected to receive uniforms. In Coimbatore alone, around 4,000 first-grade students are waiting for their uniforms.
Despite the delays, the department is actively working to ensure that students receive their uniforms as soon as possible, and the situation is expected to improve in the coming weeks.
