In a move to tighten school admission procedures and prevent the enrollment of illegal Bangladeshi migrants, the Delhi government's Directorate of Education issued an official circular on Monday. The directive mandates that schools follow stringent verification procedures for students' documents to ensure that only eligible children are admitted. This includes a thorough review of all documents submitted by migrant children during the enrollment process.
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi took to her official X (formerly Twitter) handle to highlight the importance of these new measures. She tweeted, “On one side, the BJP is facilitating the settlement of Rohingyas by offering them EWS flats and other facilities. On the other side, the Aam Aadmi Party government is taking every possible step to ensure that Rohingyas do not get the rights of Delhiites. Today, the Education Department of the Delhi Government has passed a strict order that no Rohingya should be given admission in Delhi’s government schools.”
The official notice from the Directorate of Education stresses the need for schools to apply greater scrutiny in the admissions process to prevent unauthorized admissions, specifically targeting the enrollment of illegal Bangladeshi migrants. In cases of doubt about a student’s citizenship status, the notice directs school authorities to refer the matter to local police and revenue authorities for further verification.
The circular also instructs the Heads of Government, Government-aided, and unaided recognized private schools to ensure strict compliance with the verification process. Additionally, Deputy Directors of Education at the district and zonal levels are tasked with submitting weekly reports on cases where students' citizenship statuses remain unverified.
This decision is part of the Delhi government's broader initiative to promote transparency and ensure that only eligible students are enrolled in schools, especially in light of concerns over illegal immigration. By implementing these new rules, the Delhi government aims to safeguard the integrity of the educational system while preventing unauthorized access to public resources.
