Delhi University (DU) to Implement Single Girl Child Quota for PG Admissions
Delhi University (DU) is set to introduce a new quota system for postgraduate (PG) admissions that will prioritize single girl children. This initiative, aimed at promoting equality and providing educational opportunities to single girl children, follows the success of a similar provision in the university’s undergraduate (UG) admissions.
The single girl child quota at DU will allow students who are the only child in their family to avail of certain benefits during the PG admissions process. The university hopes that this will help encourage more women to pursue higher education, thereby fostering gender equality and supporting families with a single daughter.
The move has been widely appreciated for recognizing the challenges faced by single girl children in society, especially in families with no other siblings. It is designed to make higher education more accessible to these students, ensuring they have a level playing field when applying for PG courses at DU.
This new initiative is part of DU's broader efforts to improve the inclusivity and diversity of its student body, particularly for women. It also reflects the university's commitment to supporting students from varied socio-economic backgrounds by offering different types of support, such as scholarships and reservations, for marginalized groups.
The single girl child quota has been a longstanding demand from various sections of society, and DU’s decision to implement it at the PG level is expected to pave the way for other universities across the country to adopt similar policies.
The university's administration is also exploring further ways to enhance support for female students, including counseling, career guidance, and mentorship programs, to ensure that single girl children, along with all students, can excel in their academic and professional pursuits.
The new PG quota policy is expected to come into effect soon, and Delhi University is working on the logistics and implementation details to ensure a smooth transition for applicants. As DU continues to expand opportunities for underrepresented groups, the introduction of the single girl child quota is seen as a significant step towards gender parity in higher education.
