Completing her medical education at AIIMS placed her among the country’s top-performing students, with a clear path toward a successful career in medicine.

Dr Ankur Lather’s path to becoming an IAS officer stands as an example of resilience and purposeful career choices. Raised in a small village in Haryana, she displayed academic excellence from an early age, eventually earning admission to the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. Completing her medical education at AIIMS placed her among the country’s top-performing students, with a clear path toward a successful career in medicine.

Despite the stability and recognition associated with being a doctor, Dr Lather felt drawn toward public service and policymaking. Motivated by the desire to create a broader social impact, she decided to prepare for the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination, one of the most competitive examinations in India. The decision marked a significant shift from clinical practice to administrative leadership, requiring a complete change in preparation strategy and mindset.

Her UPSC journey was not without challenges. Balancing an intensive medical background with the vast UPSC syllabus demanded disciplined planning and consistent effort. Like many aspirants, she faced setbacks along the way, which tested her confidence and perseverance. However, she viewed these difficulties as learning opportunities, refining her approach with each attempt.

Dr Lather focused on structured study routines, regular answer writing practice, and a clear understanding of the examination pattern. She also emphasised conceptual clarity over rote learning, which helped her adapt her medical training to analytical and administrative subjects. Her commitment eventually paid off when she secured All India Rank 77, earning a place in the Indian Administrative Service.

Her success story highlights an important message for aspirants across the country: setbacks do not determine outcomes. By remaining focused on her goal and staying adaptable, Dr Lather demonstrated that career transitions, even from highly specialised fields, are possible with dedication.

As an IAS officer, she now has the opportunity to contribute directly to governance, policy implementation, and public welfare. Her journey continues to inspire students from rural backgrounds and professionals considering a shift toward civil services. Dr Lather’s experience reflects the evolving aspirations of young Indians who seek meaningful roles in nation-building, reinforcing the idea that success is defined not just by achievement, but by purpose.
