In the 2025 edition, IISc retained its top position among Indian universities , continuing its legacy as a premier research institute known for excellence in science and technology.

India’s higher education institutions have made significant strides in global visibility, with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, and Anna University, Chennai, leading the country in the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2025.

The Times Higher Education (THE) rankings are among the most prestigious and closely watched university rankings globally, assessing institutions based on parameters such as teaching, research output, international outlook, and industry income. In the 2025 edition, IISc retained its top position among Indian universities, continuing its legacy as a premier research institute known for excellence in science and technology.

Anna University made headlines by registering one of the most significant improvements in its position, climbing several spots from last year’s rankings. The university’s rise was attributed to increased research publication output, stronger academic-industry collaborations, and efforts to enhance faculty quality and student diversity.

A total of 91 Indian institutions were featured in the rankings this year, reflecting an encouraging trend in the global academic landscape. Universities such as JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, Mahindra University, and Amity University also improved their standings, showcasing the broader efforts being made across the country to elevate the quality of education.

According to THE officials, the rise of Indian universities in the rankings demonstrates a greater emphasis on global research collaborations, improved teaching frameworks, and an expanding role in international academia. However, experts note that Indian institutions still face challenges in achieving consistent visibility on the global stage due to factors such as limited international student enrollment and lower global perception scores.

The Government of India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and ongoing efforts to internationalize Indian campuses have been cited as key drivers behind the improved performance. Initiatives like the Institutes of Eminence (IoE) scheme and increased funding for research have also started to show measurable results.

Speaking on the development, a senior official from the Ministry of Education said, “The improved rankings show that Indian universities are moving in the right direction. More institutions are now aligning with global standards and investing in research and innovation.”

As Indian universities continue to climb global rankings, students and researchers can expect improved facilities, better academic collaborations, and increased opportunities to participate in international exchange programs. The rankings not only reflect academic excellence but also act as a guide for students considering institutions for higher education within Asia.
