We urge parents to remain patient and informed via official government sources.” The district administration is expected to release daily updates regarding school operations and public safety measures.

In light of worsening weather conditions across the Kargil region, the district administration has announced the temporary closure of all schools starting from April 21, 2025, until further notice. The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of school children amid reports of heavy snowfall, rain, and falling temperatures in various parts of Ladakh.

According to the District Magistrate’s office, the inclement weather has disrupted normal life, making road conditions hazardous and transportation unreliable. With weather forecasts predicting further snowfall in higher altitude areas and possible landslides or road blockages, authorities have opted for proactive safety measures.

Adverse Conditions Prompt Action

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for continuing bad weather in the Union Territory, particularly in mountainous areas like Drass, Zanskar, and parts of Suru Valley. These regions have already reported several inches of snow, and sub-zero night temperatures are making the situation more severe.

Local administration teams have been mobilized to monitor road and weather conditions, especially in zones prone to avalanches and landslides.

 Academic Schedules Affected

The school closure affects both government and private institutions in the district. Many of these schools had recently reopened after the winter break. Online classes are being considered as a temporary alternative, but limited internet connectivity in some remote areas poses a challenge.

 Advisory to Parents and Guardians

Parents have been advised to avoid sending children out unnecessarily and to ensure they are adequately clothed against the cold. The administration has also requested families in vulnerable regions to stay alert and cooperate with local disaster response teams if needed.

 When Will Schools Reopen?

As of now, no official date has been announced for the reopening of schools. The administration has stated that further decisions will be taken based on weather improvements and road clearance efforts by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and local authorities.

 Official Statement

In an official communication, the District Education Officer stated:

“The safety of our children is our utmost priority. We urge parents to remain patient and informed via official government sources.”

The district administration is expected to release daily updates regarding school operations and public safety measures.
