The Kerala government has approved a 25 percent reduction in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) or Class 10 syllabus, to be implemented from the next academic year.

The Kerala government has approved a 25 percent reduction in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) or Class 10 syllabus, to be implemented from the next academic year. The move, aimed at reducing academic pressure on students, has been designed to ensure that essential learning outcomes and education quality are maintained.

In a recent statement, V. Sivankutty, Minister for General Education and Labour, clarified that the syllabus reduction will not affect the core content of textbooks or the overall quality of education. “The reduction is structured carefully so that no critical chapters or portions are removed, and students continue to gain comprehensive knowledge across subjects,” he said. The decision intends to make the learning process more focused and less burdensome without compromising academic standards.

The reduction covers subjects across the Class 10 curriculum, including languages, mathematics, science, and social studies. Educational experts believe that this approach can help students concentrate on core concepts, improve understanding, and reduce exam-related stress. Schools have been instructed to align their teaching plans with the revised syllabus and ensure that students are adequately prepared for assessments.

The Ministry has emphasized that assessment methods and evaluation criteria will remain rigorous, and students will still be tested on all key competencies as per the National Education Policy (NEP) guidelines. Teachers will play a pivotal role in adapting lesson plans and ensuring that the reduced syllabus does not compromise overall learning outcomes.

Parents and educators have welcomed the move, highlighting that syllabus rationalization can enhance student engagement and encourage better conceptual clarity. Additionally, schools are expected to supplement textbook learning with activity-based and experiential methods to reinforce understanding, particularly in practical subjects like science and mathematics.

While the syllabus has been reduced, the government has assured that the changes will not impact preparation for higher secondary education. The Department of Education has issued guidelines to ensure smooth implementation and monitoring of the revised syllabus across government and private schools in the state.

With this decision, Kerala continues its efforts to balance academic rigor with student well-being, reflecting a broader trend in education reforms aimed at creating a more efficient and student-friendly curriculum. The 25 percent reduction is seen as a proactive measure to ease learning pressure while retaining the essence of the curriculum, helping students achieve better outcomes in examinations and life skills.
