The Supreme Court of India on Friday deferred the hearing of a petition concerning the transparency of the NEET PG 2025 answer key. The matter, which holds significant importance for lakhs of postgraduate medical aspirants across the country, will now be heard after two weeks. The bench’s decision to adjourn came despite repeated appeals from petitioners requesting early intervention on the matter.
The plea before the court specifically highlighted concerns regarding the delay in releasing the NEET PG answer key and the absence of a clear mechanism for students to challenge discrepancies. Petitioners argued that timely publication of the answer key is essential to uphold transparency and fairness in the evaluation process. They maintained that without early access to the answer key, candidates are unable to verify their responses or raise objections effectively, leading to uncertainty about their results.
The petition drew attention to past instances in which exams of national importance had faced criticism due to opacity in the evaluation process. NEET PG, being one of the most competitive exams in the country for postgraduate medical admissions, directly impacts the careers of thousands of doctors. Petitioners urged the court to direct authorities to release the answer key and provide an objection window before results are declared, thereby allowing greater accountability and minimizing disputes.
However, the bench decided to grant more time for responses from the authorities involved, including the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). The adjournment means candidates will have to wait at least two more weeks before any clarity emerges on the court’s stance regarding the issue. While the court acknowledged the concerns raised, it observed that the matter requires careful consideration before issuing directions.
The delay has added to the anxiety of NEET PG aspirants, many of whom have been vocal on social media about the need for transparency. Candidates believe that the early release of answer keys and provision for objections is a standard practice in most competitive exams, and NEET PG should adopt similar mechanisms to maintain fairness. The uncertainty surrounding the evaluation process has also raised concerns about timely counseling and admissions, which are already bound by strict academic calendars.
Legal experts suggest that the outcome of this case could set an important precedent for how competitive examinations in India are managed in terms of transparency and candidate rights. If the court eventually directs authorities to release the answer key with an objection window, it could significantly change the process for future NEET PG exams and other national-level tests.
For now, NEET PG 2025 candidates will have to wait until the Supreme Court resumes hearing the matter. The next two weeks are expected to bring clarity on whether the authorities will be directed to ensure greater transparency in the evaluation process. Until then, the fate of thousands of aspirants continues to hang in the balance, with transparency and fairness in exams once again at the center of debate.
