In a bid to strengthen school attendance and prevent dropouts, the Odisha government has issued fresh guidelines directing teachers to take proactive steps when students remain absent for seven days or more. The initiative places greater responsibility on schools to track attendance patterns and engage directly with families to address issues affecting regular participation in classes.
Under the new instructions, teachers are required to contact parents or guardians if a student does not attend school for a week. If communication over the phone does not yield clarity or improvement, teachers may conduct home visits to understand the reasons behind the prolonged absence. Education officials have stated that this approach is intended to identify challenges at an early stage, including health issues, economic hardships, migration, or lack of access to transportation.
The policy is part of Odisha’s broader efforts to ensure universal access to education and reduce dropout rates, particularly at the primary and secondary levels. Officials noted that prolonged absenteeism often precedes permanent withdrawal from school, making early intervention crucial. By involving families directly, the government hopes to address both academic and non-academic barriers that prevent children from attending school regularly.
Teachers have also been encouraged to coordinate with school management committees and local authorities where necessary. In cases involving social or economic difficulties, schools may connect families with relevant welfare schemes or support services. The education department has emphasized that the focus of the initiative is supportive rather than punitive, aiming to reintegrate students into the learning process.
The directive is expected to play a key role in rural and tribal areas, where students are more vulnerable to dropping out due to seasonal migration or household responsibilities. Education experts have welcomed the move, stating that direct engagement with families can help schools better understand local challenges and design appropriate interventions.
State officials have clarified that schools must maintain proper records of follow-up actions taken in response to student absences. Regular monitoring and reporting will help assess the effectiveness of the initiative and identify areas that require additional attention.
By strengthening communication between schools and families, the Odisha government aims to ensure that no child is left behind due to prolonged absence. The policy reinforces the importance of community involvement in education and highlights the role of teachers not only as educators but also as facilitators of student well-being and continuity in learning.
