Rajasthan Government Withdraws ‘Shaurya Diwas’ School Order Following Backlash

Following the backlash, the Rajasthan government decided to revoke the order to prevent further unrest and maintain focus on the academic schedule.

The Rajasthan government has officially withdrawn a contentious order that directed all state schools to observe December 6 as "Shaurya Diwas," marking the day in 1992 when the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya was demolished. The decision to recall the order came after widespread criticism from political leaders, civil society groups, and Muslim organisations, who described the move as provocative and inappropriate in an educational context.

Initially, the state’s School Education Department had circulated the order to all government schools, instructing them to hold activities commemorating Shaurya Diwas. However, the directive quickly became the center of controversy, with opposition parties accusing the government of promoting a politically charged agenda in schools. Various Muslim organisations also protested, arguing that it was insensitive to the historical and religious sensitivities associated with the event.

Adding to the confusion, contradictory statements emerged from senior education officials. School Education Minister Madan Dilawar justified the directive by pointing out that exams were underway, and it was impractical to conduct other events or activities on campus. In contrast, Sitaram Jat, Director of Secondary Board Education, clarified that no such order had been issued from his office. This discrepancy highlighted miscommunication within the department and added to the public debate over the decision.

Following the backlash, the Rajasthan government decided to revoke the order to prevent further unrest and maintain focus on the academic schedule. The Department of School Education released a statement confirming that schools would not conduct any activities marking December 6, and regular classes and examinations would continue as planned.

Education experts noted that introducing politically or religiously sensitive observances in schools can have adverse effects on students, including fostering division or confusion. Many argued that schools should remain neutral spaces focused on learning, critical thinking, and inclusivity, rather than commemorating contentious historical events.

The recall of the Shaurya Diwas order is being viewed as a step to de-escalate tensions in the state. Analysts suggest that the government acted swiftly to prevent the issue from becoming a flashpoint during an already sensitive period, given the political and communal undertones of the date.

Opposition leaders and community representatives have welcomed the decision to withdraw the order but continue to call for clear guidelines ensuring that educational institutions do not become arenas for political or communal messaging. They emphasise that school curricula and activities should promote historical understanding and critical reflection without taking sides on controversial events.

The incident also highlights the challenges state governments face in managing communication between different departments. Misalignment between ministers and department heads can amplify controversies, as seen in this case. Officials have reportedly pledged to improve coordination to prevent similar situations in the future.

With exams ongoing and schools focused on academic activities, the withdrawal ensures that students’ education remains uninterrupted while easing tensions across political and community groups in Rajasthan.
