Tourists, particularly those visiting hilly areas and trekking routes, have been cautioned against venturing into the mountains during this period.

Dehradun, August 4, 2025

The Uttarakhand state government has declared a holiday for schools in several districts today, following an Orange Alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The alert comes in response to forecasts of intense rainfall in various parts of the hill state, especially in the Kumaon and Garhwal regions. This move has been taken as a preventive step to ensure the safety of students and staff amid potential weather-related disruptions.

According to the IMD, Uttarakhand is likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall throughout the day. Isolated areas may even experience extremely heavy rainfall. The alert is in effect for districts including Dehradun, Nainital, Pauri Garhwal, Champawat, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh. The IMD has also warned of possible landslides, waterlogging, and flash floods due to the intense monsoon activity.

In light of the forecast, district administrations across affected regions have advised people to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. The education department issued a circular last night instructing all government and private schools to suspend physical classes for the day. Online classes, where feasible, may continue to ensure minimal academic disruption.

Officials in Dehradun confirmed that municipal teams are on standby to handle emergencies and have intensified monitoring of vulnerable slopes and riverbanks. Disaster management teams have been deployed in high-risk areas, and temporary shelters have been prepared in case evacuations are required.

Local residents have been advised to stay updated through official channels and to report any emergency situations to the state disaster response helpline. Tourists, particularly those visiting hilly areas and trekking routes, have been cautioned against venturing into the mountains during this period. Several roads, especially those in landslide-prone zones, have already been closed as a preventive measure.

The monsoon season has been particularly intense in Uttarakhand this year. Last week, parts of Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts faced flash floods that disrupted normal life and led to temporary road closures. The government is closely monitoring the weather situation and has instructed all district magistrates to remain on high alert.

Meanwhile, weather experts suggest that the monsoon system hovering over northern India is likely to persist over the next few days. This may result in more rainfall in the Himalayan region, possibly extending the impact through the week. The state’s irrigation department is also keeping a close watch on river water levels to prevent overflow or breaches.

The Uttarakhand government has reiterated its commitment to prioritizing public safety and has urged citizens to act responsibly during this period of adverse weather. Regular updates will be shared through official bulletins and local administration channels.
