The Supreme Court has summoned the Secretary of the Delhi Directorate of Education (DoE) after expressing strong displeasure over the department’s failure to act in matters related to school closures in the national capital. The court took note of the prolonged inaction despite repeated directions and concerns raised over the disruption of education for thousands of students.
During the hearing, the bench observed that several schools were closed due to safety violations and infrastructure deficiencies, but the authorities failed to take adequate steps to ensure that alternative arrangements were made for affected students. The court questioned why the education department did not act promptly to either ensure compliance by the school managements or provide immediate relief to students whose academic sessions were severely impacted.
The issue came to light after multiple petitions highlighted that several private schools were shut down for non-compliance with fire safety, building regulations, and other mandatory standards. Despite closures being ordered by local authorities, the education department allegedly did not formulate a proper rehabilitation plan for displaced students. This led to serious concerns regarding their right to education and academic continuity.
The Supreme Court noted that the education of children cannot be compromised due to administrative lapses. It stressed that the education department has a constitutional and statutory duty to ensure that students are not deprived of their basic right to schooling because of regulatory failures. The bench also questioned the accountability of officials responsible for monitoring compliance and enforcing safety standards in educational institutions.
The Delhi government was asked to explain why strict action was not taken against defaulting school authorities at an earlier stage. The court also sought clarity on whether inspections were conducted on time and whether safety norms were being regularly audited across schools in the city. The Secretary of the DoE has been directed to appear before the court and submit a detailed report on steps taken so far and future measures planned to prevent similar incidents.
Legal experts say the case underscores the growing concern of the judiciary over governance failures affecting public services, especially education. The Supreme Court’s intervention is being viewed as a strong reminder to authorities about the need for transparency, efficiency, and accountability in administrative decision-making.
Parents of affected students have welcomed the court’s strict stand, stating that repeated delays had caused immense hardship to families and disrupted children’s academic progress. Many students were forced to seek admissions in other schools at short notice, leading to financial and emotional stress.
The Delhi government is now expected to submit a comprehensive roadmap to address the deficiencies in school infrastructure, strengthen monitoring mechanisms, and ensure that such large-scale disruptions do not recur in the future. The next hearing is expected to review the compliance report and further action may be ordered based on the findings.
