Tamil Nadu is commemorating the 100-year anniversary of 2,238 government schools across the state with special celebrations. The celebrations kicked off at the Thirukuvallai Middle School in Thanjavur, marking the start of a statewide initiative to honor these institutions that have been instrumental in shaping generations of students. This school is particularly significant as it was once attended by former Chief Minister Karunanidhi.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, who began the centenary celebrations. The events will continue across the state from January 23 to February 2, 2025. A series of cultural programs, exhibitions, and performances will highlight the history and contributions of these schools.
Schools that are celebrating their centenary will host alumni, former teachers, and local leaders to mark the occasion. The government has issued guidelines for the celebrations, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging the contributions of both current and former teachers and students. Additionally, the celebrations aim to encourage students to showcase their talents through various activities.
As part of the centenary celebrations, the government has also called for a documentation of the event through photographs and videos to preserve the memories of this historic milestone. School heads and district education officers have been instructed to ensure that the celebrations are carried out in a meaningful and well-organized manner, fostering a sense of pride in these schools and their long-standing contributions to education in Tamil Nadu.
