According to the calendar, educational institutions will remain closed from January 15 to January 17, 2026, to mark the traditional harvest festival and associated observances.

The Tamil Nadu school education authorities have announced the holiday schedule for Pongal 2026, confirming a three-day break for schools across the state. According to the calendar, educational institutions will remain closed from January 15 to January 17, 2026, to mark the traditional harvest festival and associated observances.

Pongal, one of the most important festivals in Tamil Nadu, is celebrated over multiple days and holds cultural, agricultural and social significance. Schools will observe a holiday on January 15 for Pongal, followed by closures on January 16 for Mattu Pongal and Thiruvalluvar Day, and January 17 for Kaanum Pongal and Uzhavar Thinam. During this period, schools will remain shut to allow students and staff to participate in festival celebrations with their families.

Bhogi, which traditionally marks the first day of the Pongal festival, falls on January 14, 2026. As of now, there is no official announcement declaring January 14 as a school holiday. Some students and parent groups have reportedly requested an additional holiday for Bhogi, citing customary celebrations. However, any decision on this matter will depend on an official notification from the Tamil Nadu School Education Department. Parents and students are advised not to rely on unofficial updates and to wait for confirmation from authorities.

In addition to Pongal holidays, Tamil Nadu schools follow a structured academic calendar that includes national holidays, religious festivals and vacation periods. As per the tentative holiday list for 2026, schools will observe New Year’s Day on January 1 and Republic Day on January 26. The summer vacation is expected to begin from April 1 and continue until May 15, allowing students a long academic break during peak summer months.

Other important holidays listed in the calendar include Good Friday on March 28, Independence Day on August 15, Vinayaka Chaturthi on September 7, and Ayudha Pooja and Dussehra holidays from October 11 to October 17. Deepavali holidays are scheduled from October 29 to November 2, giving students an extended festive break. Schools will also observe Christmas on December 25.

The winter vacation is expected to commence on December 20, 2026, and extend until January 1, 2027. These dates are tentative and may vary slightly based on district-level decisions or administrative requirements.

Parents and students are encouraged to regularly check official announcements issued by the Tamil Nadu School Education Department or their respective schools for any updates or changes to the holiday schedule. Timely awareness of holidays helps families plan travel, cultural activities and academic preparation effectively.

During this period, schools will remain shut to allow students and staff to participate in festival celebrations with their families.
