The Tamil Nadu government has announced a five-day holiday for all schools, colleges, and government offices, beginning on January 14, 2025, to celebrate the Tamil harvest festival, Pongal.

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a five-day holiday for all schools, colleges, and government offices, beginning on January 14, 2025, to celebrate the Tamil harvest festival, Pongal. The holidays will continue through January 19, 2025, with schools reopening on Monday, January 20, 2025.

Pongal is one of the most important festivals in Tamil Nadu, and it will be observed in several phases. The festival kicks off with Thai Pongal on January 14, followed by Mattu Pongal and Thiruvalluvar Day on January 15, and Kaanum Pongal and Uzhavar Thirunal on January 16. These days are celebrated with various cultural events, traditional rituals, and feasts that bring communities together to honor the harvest and pay tribute to nature, cattle, and the agricultural community.

In addition to the regular holidays, the government has also declared January 17, 2025, as an additional holiday. This was done in response to requests from residents and government employees across the state, many of whom travel to their native villages to celebrate the festival with their families. The government recognized the need for this extra day off to accommodate travel plans.

With this announcement, schools and colleges across the state will remain closed for a full week, giving students and staff ample time to celebrate the festival and engage in family gatherings. January 17 will be observed as an additional holiday, and in compensation, January 25, 2025, will be a regular school day instead.

For government employees, the holiday extension means they will have the opportunity to relax, spend quality time with their loved ones, and fully immerse themselves in the cultural and religious significance of the festival. Students can also take part in various traditional events, arts, and performances that mark this joyous time of the year.

This extended break ensures that people in Tamil Nadu can celebrate Pongal without the constraints of work or school, making it a time of joy, unity, and gratitude. The government has emphasized that this holiday period will help foster community spirit, promote family bonding, and offer people a chance to reconnect with their roots, heritage, and traditions.

As the state gears up for a week-long celebration, the government’s thoughtful decision to provide additional leave allows for a more inclusive celebration of the festival, ensuring everyone can enjoy this vibrant occasion to the fullest.

The festival kicks off with Thai Pongal on January 14, followed by Mattu Pongal and Thiruvalluvar Day on January 15, and Kaanum Pongal and Uzhavar Thirunal on January 16.
