Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M. K. Stalin, has formally requested the University Grants Commission (UGC) to reschedule the UGC NET (National Eligibility Test) January 2025 exam due to its overlap with the Pongal festival. In his appeal, Stalin highlighted that the festival is a major cultural and religious event for the people of Tamil Nadu and is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion. The timing of the UGC NET exam, falling during the same period as Pongal, could pose significant challenges for students who wish to participate in both their academic commitments and cultural celebrations.
Stalin urged the UGC to consider the importance of the festival for the students in Tamil Nadu and reschedule the examination dates to avoid any overlap. The Chief Minister emphasized that many students from Tamil Nadu, who may need to travel to their hometowns or engage in traditional Pongal festivities with their families, would find it difficult to attend the exam during this period.
This request from the Tamil Nadu CM comes after concerns were raised by students, parents, and educational bodies in the state. In the letter to UGC, Stalin suggested that the exam be postponed to ensure that Tamil Nadu students are not put at a disadvantage and can participate in both the examination process and the cultural celebrations without any conflict.
The UGC NET exam is a significant examination for students aspiring for assistant professorships and junior research fellowships. Given the importance of this exam, Stalin’s appeal underlines the need to balance academic schedules with regional festivals and public holidays.
The UGC has yet to respond to the request, and students are eagerly awaiting an official statement on whether their concerns will be addressed.
