Agartala: The Tripura government has earmarked ₹264 crore for the comprehensive development of school infrastructure, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha announced recently. The move aims to strengthen the foundation of education in the state by addressing critical gaps in physical infrastructure and creating a more conducive learning environment in government-run schools.

Speaking to the media, Chief Minister Saha emphasized that the allocation is a part of the state government’s broader strategy to reform the education sector. "We are committed to ensuring that every child in Tripura has access to quality education in a well-equipped and safe environment. This allocation is a step towards fulfilling that promise," he stated.

The funds will be utilized under several schemes and initiatives that focus on infrastructure enhancement, including the construction of new classrooms, renovation of old school buildings, improvement of sanitation facilities such as toilets for both boys and girls, and the provision of drinking water and electricity. The government also plans to improve sports infrastructure and introduce digital learning tools in selected schools.

Dr. Saha also pointed out that the government has been actively working to address the shortage of basic facilities in rural and remote schools. He said that many schools, especially in interior tribal areas, have struggled with inadequate infrastructure for years. With the new budgetary allocation, the state aims to bridge this gap and provide equal learning opportunities to all children, regardless of their location.

The initiative also aligns with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which stresses the importance of creating inclusive, accessible, and well-equipped school environments. The state government plans to implement these improvements in phases, ensuring that both urban and rural schools are covered under the scheme.

Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath added that this is one of the largest single investments made by the state in the education infrastructure sector. He mentioned that proper monitoring mechanisms would be put in place to ensure transparency and timely execution of the projects. The department will collaborate with various agencies and local bodies for the smooth implementation of the plans.

Local school authorities and education activists have welcomed the move, stating that improved infrastructure can significantly boost student enrollment and retention. "Basic infrastructure plays a crucial role in shaping a child’s educational journey. This initiative will benefit thousands of students, especially girls who often drop out due to lack of proper sanitation facilities," said an education officer based in West Tripura.

The ₹264 crore allocation is seen as a landmark decision in Tripura’s ongoing efforts to revamp its public education system. With strong political will and a structured approach to implementation, the government hopes to transform its schools into centers of academic excellence and inclusivity in the coming years.

The move aims to strengthen the foundation of education in the state by addressing critical gaps in physical infrastructure and creating a more conducive learning environment in government-run schools.
