The Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE), one of India’s oldest and most respected academic institutions in the field of economics and public policy, has welcomed Professor Umakant Dash as its new Vice-Chancellor. The appointment comes at a time when the institute is seeking to expand its research outreach and academic collaborations, both nationally and globally.

Professor Dash, a seasoned academic with decades of experience in teaching, research, and administration, officially assumed charge at the Pune-based institute earlier this week. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Director of the Institute of Economic Growth (IEG), Delhi, and held several key academic positions in institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Known for his contributions in the fields of health economics, development studies, and institutional policy, Professor Dash has published widely in reputed national and international journals. His research work has influenced various public policy decisions, particularly in the areas of healthcare financing and socio-economic development. As a scholar and policy advisor, he has worked closely with central and state governments, as well as international agencies such as the World Health Organization and the World Bank.

Speaking on his new role, Professor Dash stated that he is committed to strengthening the research foundation of the Gokhale Institute while promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and real-world policy engagement. He emphasized the importance of preparing students to meet the evolving demands of economics, public administration, and governance in the modern world.

The Gokhale Institute was established in 1930 and has since earned a reputation for producing leading economists, scholars, and policy experts. With a strong emphasis on empirical research and policy-oriented education, the institute continues to play a key role in shaping economic thought in India. The appointment of a dynamic and experienced leader like Umakant Dash is expected to support its vision of remaining a centre of excellence in economic and social research.

Welcoming Professor Dash, the governing body of the institute expressed confidence that his leadership would guide GIPE into a new era of academic innovation and global engagement. The faculty, students, and research community also extended a warm welcome, expressing enthusiasm for the new direction the institute may take under his guidance.

In the coming months, Professor Dash is expected to launch several new initiatives, including expanding the institute’s research capacity, fostering partnerships with other leading institutions, and enhancing the institute’s role in advising public policy. His appointment has been received positively across academic circles, with many viewing it as a step forward in reinforcing the institute’s commitment to academic rigor and public relevance.
