The campaign aligns with the state government's broader objectives of sustainability and environmental restoration.

Lucknow, June 5:

In a special initiative to mark World Environment Day, schools across Uttar Pradesh are set to launch a large-scale tree plantation campaign, with each sapling dedicated to the name of a student's mother. This innovative program, spearheaded by the Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Department, aims to promote environmental consciousness while instilling values of gratitude and responsibility among students.

The campaign will be carried out in both government and private schools, targeting the active participation of lakhs of students and teachers across the state. Each participant will plant a tree sapling, and a name tag bearing the student’s mother’s name will be placed next to it. This symbolic gesture is expected to deepen the bond between children and environmental stewardship while also acknowledging the nurturing role of mothers in their lives.

Objectives of the Initiative

According to officials from the Basic Education Department, the key goals of this initiative are:

  • To raise environmental awareness among schoolchildren from an early age.
  • To increase green cover across urban and rural school campuses.
  • To involve families, especially mothers, in school-led ecological activities.
  • To encourage children to care for the saplings as a tribute to their mothers.

Director General of School Education, Uttar Pradesh, Vijay Kiran Anand, stated that this drive will not only help improve the local environment but also cultivate a lasting sense of care, responsibility, and emotional connection to nature. The campaign aligns with the state government's broader objectives of sustainability and environmental restoration.

Execution Plan

Each school has been instructed to prepare for the drive by identifying suitable land within school premises or nearby community spaces. Teachers will guide students on the importance of tree plantation and the basics of sapling care. Schools are also being encouraged to invite parents to participate in the plantation event.

District education officers will oversee the smooth execution of the campaign, ensuring proper documentation and follow-up. Students will maintain a record of the growth of the saplings over the academic year, which may also be integrated into their environmental science curriculum.

The state education department has collaborated with the Department of Forest and local nurseries to supply saplings suitable for different climatic zones within Uttar Pradesh. Popular choices include neem, peepal, mango, and guava trees, known for their environmental benefits and adaptability.

Public Response and Broader Significance

The initiative has received positive responses from educators, parents, and environmental activists. Many believe this unique fusion of education, emotion, and ecology will leave a lasting impact on young minds. Environmental NGOs have praised the campaign as a model that could be replicated in other states.

By connecting the act of planting a tree with the personal identity of one's mother, the program adds a powerful emotional element to environmental action. It serves as a reminder that sustainability is not just a policy issue but a deeply personal and cultural responsibility.

The campaign will be carried out in both government and private schools, targeting the active participation of lakhs of students and teachers across the state.
