Edward Berger, known for his direction of the Academy Award-winning film All Quiet on the Western Front, and Austin Butler, acclaimed for his performance in Elvis, are teaming up for the highly anticipated time-travel thriller The Barrier. The film is based on a short story by MacMillan Hedges and will be directed by Berger, with Hedges also contributing the script.
The film is expected to combine elements of Interstellar and Top Gun, though its plot details are being kept under wraps for now. The movie is anticipated to spark a competitive bidding war among major studios and streaming platforms. Besides starring in the lead role, Berger will also serve as the producer for The Barrier, with Butler taking on an executive producer role as well.
Berger, fresh from the success of All Quiet on the Western Front—which won four Academy Awards, including Best International Feature Film—has set his sights on this exciting new project. He is also working on the papal thriller Conclave, starring Ralph Fiennes, and The Ballad of a Small Player, featuring Colin Farrell and Tilda Swinton.
Meanwhile, Austin Butler is currently filming Caught Stealing for director Darren Aronofsky. He recently starred in Dune: Part Two opposite Timothée Chalamet and took on significant roles in The Bikeriders with Tom Hardy and Masters of the Air for Apple TV+. Butler's upcoming projects include a starring role opposite Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, and Emma Stone in Ari Aster's Eddington.
