The year 2025 proved to be a landmark period not only for new theatrical releases but also for re-released films, as several popular titles returned to cinemas and achieved remarkable box office success. With audiences showing renewed interest in revisiting memorable films on the big screen, re-releases emerged as a profitable trend for the Indian film industry.
Topping the list of the highest-grossing re-releases of 2025 was Baahubali: The Epic. Directed by SS Rajamouli, the film starred Prabhas and Rana Daggubati in lead roles, with Anushka Shetty, Tamannaah Bhatia, and Ramya Krishna playing pivotal characters. Upon its re-release, the magnum opus collected over Rs 72 crore, making it the most successful re-run of the year. The film’s grand visuals, powerful performances, and epic storytelling once again drew large crowds to theatres years after its original release.
Romantic drama Sanam Teri Kasam secured the second position on the list. Directed by Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, the film starred Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane. Despite receiving a modest response during its original run, the re-release helped the film gain wider appreciation. It earned approximately Rs 39.15 crore, benefiting from strong emotional connect and social media-driven word-of-mouth.
Close behind was the critically acclaimed period folk thriller Tumbbad. Originally released in 2018, the film was directed by Rahi Anil Barve and Anand Gandhi and starred Sohum Shah. The re-release earned around Rs 37.5 crore, reaffirming its cult status. Sohum Shah had earlier spoken about the emotional closure the re-release brought, stating that the renewed audience response helped the film finally receive the recognition it deserved.
Another notable entry was Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, directed by Ayan Mukerji and starring Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Kalki Koechlin. The film’s re-release performed strongly, collecting approximately Rs 25.4 crore. The film’s themes of friendship, relationships, and self-discovery continued to resonate with audiences across age groups.
Rounding off the top five was the Tamil blockbuster Ghilli, starring Vijay and directed by Dharani. The film’s energetic storytelling and popular music attracted fans once again, contributing to its successful re-run at the box office.
Trade analysts believe the success of these re-releases highlights the power of nostalgia and the theatrical experience. With improved audience turnout and rising interest in classic titles, re-releases have become an effective way for filmmakers to extend a film’s lifecycle while offering viewers a chance to relive cinematic moments on the big screen
