The medical drama Grey’s Anatomy paid a heartfelt on-air tribute to actor Eric Dane during its February 26 episode, one week after his passing at the age of 53 following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease. The tribute was featured at the end of the episode and celebrated Dane’s legacy as Dr Mark Sloan, affectionately known to fans as “McSteamy.”

The brief video montage, approximately 60 seconds long, compiled a series of the character’s most memorable moments from his time on the show. Throughout the tribute, a cover version of Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars played in the background, a track long associated with emotional peaks in the series and particularly meaningful to many Grey’s Anatomy viewers.

Introduced in the show’s second season as a charismatic and confident plastic surgeon, Sloan quickly became a fan favourite. His character’s complex relationships, quick wit and dramatic story arcs — including his deep friendships and romantic entanglements — helped define his role in the series. The montage included scenes from his introduction to his pivotal interactions with other characters, showcasing both humour and depth.

One of the most powerful moments featured in the tribute was a scene in which Sloan delivers a memorable emotional quote about love, which resonated with viewers and encapsulated the character’s blend of heart and honesty. The montage closed with a title card reading “In loving memory of Eric Dane, 1972–2026,” honouring both the actor and the character he brought to life.

Eric Dane’s death on February 19 followed a courageous public battle with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, which he disclosed in April 2025. The actor used his time after diagnosis to raise awareness about the disease and continued to work on projects, including a role in the HBO drama Euphoria, which finished filming shortly before his death.

Fans and co-stars responded to the tribute with deep emotion across social media. Many praised the show’s decision to commemorate Dane’s contribution, highlighting the impact his character had on the series and its audience. The choice of Chasing Cars — a song with significant emotional resonance in the show’s history — made the moment particularly poignant for long-time viewers.

The tribute also reflects a broader appreciation for Dane’s influence on Grey’s Anatomy and the world of television drama. His portrayal of Dr Mark Sloan remains one of the standout performances in the series’ long run, remembered for its mix of charm, complexity and vulnerability. Viewers and industry peers alike continue to recognise his legacy both on and off screen.

As Grey’s Anatomy continues with new episodes, the tribute serves as a reminder of the actor’s enduring legacy and the deep connection between the show and its audience.
