At the Vulture Festival, Kevin Smith revealed that he is developing a sequel to his 1999 cult classic Dogma, which starred Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The announcement came during Smith’s Dogma Confessional session, where he expressed his excitement about revisiting the film. Despite some concerns from fans, he joked, “Some people will be like, ‘Don’t fing touch it. You’ll ruin it’. And I’m here to tell you: ‘I will. I’m fing tickled. I found a way in.’”
This update comes years after Smith had previously turned down a proposal for a Dogma sequel from producer Harvey Weinstein. However, Smith is now positive about getting Damon and Affleck to reprise their roles as the fallen angels Loki and Bartleby. Smith humorously noted that the two actors owe him for helping secure their roles in Good Will Hunting, which they never thanked him for at the Oscars or Golden Globes.
“I have been able to hold that over both their heads for 25 years, which is why they keep showing up in all the movies,” Smith joked. He confirmed that the only way the Dogma sequel would happen is with Damon and Affleck involved, teasing that their appearances will be more than just cameos.
Dogma was a religious satire and the fourth film in Smith's View Askewniverse, following Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy. The movie's plot centers on two fallen angels, Loki and Bartleby, who try to find a loophole to get back into heaven. The original film featured a star-studded cast, including Salma Hayek, Linda Fiorentino, Chris Rock, Alan Rickman, Alanis Morissette, Jason Lee, and Jason Mewes, with Smith himself appearing in a cameo role.
