HBO is preparing to launch "Lanterns," a live-action series centered around the iconic Green Lantern characters from DC Comics. Reports indicate that Kyle Chandler is in negotiations to take on the role of Hal Jordan, a character famously played by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 superhero film. The series is being developed with Chris Mundy, known for his work on "Ozark," serving as the showrunner. Mundy will also write and executive produce the series alongside Damon Lindelof, known for "Lost" and "Watchmen," and comic book writer Tom King, who has worked on titles like "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" and "Mister Miracle."

The production is being spearheaded by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television, with a long development history leading up to this point. DC Studios' heads, James Gunn and Peter Safran, expressed their excitement for the project in a joint statement, highlighting Hal Jordan and John Stewart as two of DC’s most compelling characters. They emphasized that "Lanterns" will present an original detective story that plays a foundational role in the unified DC Universe, which is set to launch next summer alongside "Superman."

Promising a fresh take on the Green Lantern legacy, "Lanterns" marks the first live-action series within the newly established DC Universe and is slated to consist of eight episodes. The anticipation surrounding the series reflects a growing interest in expanding the DC cinematic narrative with deeper, character-driven storytelling.
