Starring Vicky Kaushal in the titular role, along with Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb and Rashmika Mandanna as Maharani Yesubai, the film collected approximately Rs 716.91 crore worldwide.

The year 2025 marked a significant turnaround for Bollywood at the box office, with theatres across India witnessing increased footfalls after years of fluctuating performance. Over the past decade, the Hindi film industry experienced dramatic highs and lows, with changing audience preferences, the rise of streaming platforms, and inconsistent theatrical attendance. In 2025, however, a combination of spectacle-driven cinema, emotional storytelling, and franchise power brought audiences back to movie halls.

Leading the box office charts was Chhaava, released on February 14, 2025. Directed by Laxman Utekar, the historical biopic based on Shivaji Samant’s novel portrayed the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Starring Vicky Kaushal in the titular role, along with Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb and Rashmika Mandanna as Maharani Yesubai, the film collected approximately Rs 716.91 crore worldwide. The film’s emotional climax and grand scale resonated strongly with audiences, particularly in Maharashtra.

Following closely was Dhurandhar, released on December 5, 2025, and still running in theatres. Directed by Aditya Dhar, the espionage thriller starred Ranveer Singh as an undercover Indian spy operating in Pakistan. With earnings of around Rs 555.75 crore so far, the film benefited from strong word of mouth and a gripping narrative. The makers have already announced a sequel scheduled for 2026.

The romantic drama Saiyaara, featuring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, emerged as one of the year’s biggest surprises. Released on July 18, 2025, the Mohit Suri-directed film earned approximately Rs 398.25 crore. Its emotional storyline revolving around love and memory connected deeply with younger audiences.

Action spectacle War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, released on August 14, 2025, earned around Rs 236.55 crore. Despite mixed reviews, the film attracted strong initial footfalls due to franchise value and star power. Similarly, the mythological epic Mahavatar Narsimha collected nearly Rs 297.74 crore, reinforcing audience interest in mythological storytelling.

Content-driven films also found success. Sitaare Zameen Par earned about Rs 200.59 crore, while Raid 2 crossed Rs 206 crore, proving that strong narratives continue to attract steady audiences. Comedy franchise Housefull 5 collected Rs 183.3 crore, maintaining its appeal as a family entertainer.

Films such as Thamma and Sikandar completed the top ten list, earning Rs 157 crore and Rs 130.6 crore respectively. Despite mixed responses, they contributed to an overall positive theatrical environment.

As 2025 comes to a close, trade analysts view the year as a milestone that reaffirmed the theatrical experience. The diversity of successful films indicates that audiences are willing to return to cinemas when content, scale, and emotional engagement align.

Comedy franchise Housefull 5 collected Rs 183.3 crore, maintaining its appeal as a family entertainer.
