Liam Payne, the former member of the iconic boyband One Direction, has sadly passed away at the age of 31 after a tragic fall from a third-floor hotel room in Buenos Aires. According to local police, the incident took place on Wednesday at around 5 p.m. The police confirmed the details, stating, “Liam James Payne, composer and guitarist, former member of the band One Direction, passed away today after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Palermo.”
Emergency services arrived on the scene but confirmed that his injuries were fatal. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, and an autopsy is being conducted. Reports indicate that the police were initially called regarding an "aggressive man" who may have been under the influence of substances. Upon arrival, they discovered that a man had fallen from the balcony of his room.
Payne was in Argentina accompanying former bandmate Niall Horan, who had performed at the Movistar Arena earlier in October. He was seen at the concert, enjoying the performance alongside fans.
Born in Wolverhampton, England, in 1993, Payne was just 16 when he became a member of One Direction, a band formed by Simon Cowell on the British reality show The X Factor in 2010. Despite not winning the competition, One Direction achieved global success, selling over 70 million records with hit songs like "What Makes You Beautiful," "Night Changes," and "Steal My Girl." The band went on indefinite hiatus in 2016, allowing Payne to pursue a solo career. He released his debut single, "Strip That Down," in 2017, which peaked at No. 10 on the US Billboard charts. His later collaborations included "For You" with Rita Ora and "Get Low" with Zedd.
In May 2023, Payne shared that he was working on a new album and had plans for an upcoming tour in South America, which had to be postponed due to health issues. He had also recently released the single "Teardrops."
Payne was candid about his struggles with substance abuse and celebrated six months of sobriety by the summer of 2023. Throughout his career, he was involved in numerous philanthropic efforts. He supported various causes, including UNICEF and the Action 1D initiative, which aimed to improve the future for children. Additionally, he raised nearly $1 million for cancer charity Trekstock through fundraising efforts.
A father to his son Bear Grey Payne, whom he shares with ex-partner Cheryl Cole, Payne had been open about personal struggles, including his relationship with sobriety and mental health. His untimely passing is a significant loss to the music community and his fans worldwide.
