Kondal Movie Review: Antony Varghese's intensity misses the mark this time

While the film teases viewers with promising elements like the inner workings of life on a fishing boat and the different techniques used by fishermen, these details never develop into something deeper.

Kondal, starring Antony Varghese, had the potential to be a gripping action-packed thriller but misses the mark. The film is set in a unique coastal backdrop, with much of the action unfolding aboard a fishing boat, offering a refreshing change of scenery. The story initially sets up an interesting narrative around the struggles of fisherfolk, with Usha impressing in a negative role. However, it quickly becomes apparent that the plot is a rehash of typical revenge dramas, centering on Varghese's character, Manuel, as a righteous young man with a troubled past.

While the film teases viewers with promising elements like the inner workings of life on a fishing boat and the different techniques used by fishermen, these details never develop into something deeper. The characters remain one-dimensional, and despite a significant conflict brewing between Manuel and the villains, many plot points feel underexplored. Even with the inclusion of extended fight sequences, including a tempest and a giant shark hunt, the action lacks the intensity needed to elevate the film.

Antony Varghese delivers a strong physical performance, but the flat writing doesn’t give him enough material to showcase his acting range. Shabeer Kallarakkal and Sarath Saba try to make the most of their roles, but the film’s weak script leaves little room for character development. Even Raj B Shetty’s extended cameo feels underused.

Produced by Weekend Blockbusters, the same banner behind RDX, Kondal struggles to replicate the success of its predecessor. Where RDX excelled with its dynamic action sequences, Kondal fails to generate similar excitement. Ultimately, the film ends up as a missed opportunity, leaving what could have been an intense storm of a movie as nothing more than a gentle breeze.

The characters remain one-dimensional, and despite a significant conflict brewing between Manuel and the villains, many plot points feel underexplored.
