Malayalam filmmaker Shamzu Zayba, popularly known as Shamsudheen, has been arrested in connection with alleged financial irregularities related to the production of his 2025 romantic drama Abhilasham. The director, who earlier helmed Maniyarayile Ashokan, was taken into custody following a complaint filed by producer Ann Sariga Antony of Second Show Productions.
According to the complaint, the producer has accused Shamzu Zayba of financial misconduct during the making of Abhilasham. The allegations include deliberate delays in the shooting schedule, mismanagement of the allocated production budget and actions that reportedly resulted in substantial financial losses. The complainant has claimed that the production suffered a direct financial loss of approximately Rs 97 lakh, along with additional business losses estimated at around Rs 2 crore. Overall losses have been reported to be close to Rs 4 crore.
Authorities have stated that the case has been registered at the Thrippunithura Hill Palace Police Station in Kerala. The First Information Report reportedly names six individuals, including the director, as accused in the matter. Law enforcement officials allege that after completion of the film, the director took possession of the master print without authorisation and handed it over to a third party. This action is said to have caused further complications and financial impact for the production company.
Police officials have confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that further details will be revealed following due legal procedure. At present, no final conclusions have been announced, and the accused individuals are subject to the judicial process.
The arrest has drawn attention within the Malayalam film industry, where financial transparency and contractual obligations between filmmakers and producers are considered critical to maintaining professional standards. Industry observers note that disputes related to production budgets, intellectual property rights and distribution control can have significant financial implications for stakeholders.
Shamzu Zayba gained recognition for Maniyarayile Ashokan, a film that received attention for its narrative style and performances. Abhilasham was positioned as a romantic drama and marked another significant project in his career. However, the current allegations have overshadowed the film’s release and reception.
Legal experts point out that cases involving financial fraud in film production require detailed examination of contracts, transaction records and distribution agreements. Authorities are expected to scrutinise documentation and statements from all parties involved before proceeding further.
The Malayalam film industry has witnessed occasional disputes between producers and directors over financial management, but such matters are typically resolved through legal channels. The present case underscores the importance of maintaining transparent financial practices and adhering to contractual terms in film production.
As the investigation continues, industry stakeholders are awaiting official updates from law enforcement agencies and the court. The outcome of the case will depend on the evidence presented and the judicial process that follows.
