Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light (AWIAL) is on an exceptional award-winning streak. The film recently clinched the prestigious Best International Feature award at the 2024 Gotham Awards. The film beat out strong competition in the category, including Green Border, Hard Truths, Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell, and Vermiglio. The awards ceremony was held at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.
This latest accolade follows the film's recognition at the 17th Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) in Gold Coast, Australia, where it won the highly respected Jury Grand Prize. Earlier this year, AWIAL made a historic debut at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prix, a significant achievement for Indian cinema. The film, a Malayalam-Hindi bilingual drama, explores the lives of three women in Mumbai, each facing their own personal and societal challenges. Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, and Chhaya Kadam lead the film, delivering powerful performances.
Though AWIAL was a strong contender for India's official entry to the Oscars, it was not selected; instead, Laapataa Ladies by Kiran Rao was chosen. The film is an official Indo-French co-production, produced by Petit Chaos (France), Chalk & Cheese, and Another Birth (India). It was distributed in India by actor-producer Rana Daggubati’s company, Spirit Media. After a limited release in Kerala on September 21, the film had its nationwide theatrical release on November 22 and has been receiving rave reviews from audiences.
AWIAL's journey is one of international recognition and critical acclaim, and it continues to make waves in the global film industry.
