Indian 3 has officially been confirmed, bringing actor Kamal Haasan and filmmaker S Shankar back together for the next chapter of the popular Indian film franchise.
The announcement comes more than two years after Indian 2 reached cinemas in 2024. The second film received a mixed response from audiences and critics and performed below the expectations surrounding the reunion of Kamal Haasan and Shankar. The performance of Indian 2 had also created uncertainty over the future of the third instalment.
The latest update has now put those questions to rest. Lyca Productions has confirmed that Indian 3 is moving forward, with post production work already underway. Kamal Haasan will once again headline the film, while Shankar is returning as writer and director.
Indian 3 will take the story in a different direction by exploring the past of Veerasekaran Balram, the father of Senapathy. Kamal Haasan is expected to portray the character, continuing the franchise’s focus on Senapathy and his family history.
The character of Senapathy was first introduced in the 1996 film Indian. Directed by Shankar and starring Kamal Haasan in a dual role, the original film presented Senapathy as a former freedom fighter who becomes a vigilante while fighting corruption. The film became an important milestone in Tamil cinema and established Senapathy as one of Kamal Haasan’s memorable characters.
Nearly three decades later, Indian 2 brought the character back to the screen. The 2024 sequel once again featured Kamal Haasan as Senapathy and continued the franchise’s central theme of corruption and social responsibility.
Indian 2 also served as a direct bridge to Indian 3. The story ended with Senapathy’s future left open, creating a setup for another chapter. The makers had previously revealed that Indian 2 and Indian 3 were developed as part of a larger story. The production was eventually divided into two films because the narrative became too extensive to fit into a single movie.
A significant portion of Indian 3 was filmed alongside Indian 2. Kamal Haasan had earlier said that both films had been shot during the same broader production process. This means the latest revival of the project does not represent the beginning of the film from scratch. Instead, the current work focuses on completing and preparing the already developed material.
Recent reports had indicated that only limited additional shooting and patchwork work could be required, while a substantial amount of computer graphics and post production remained. The latest confirmation from the makers now indicates that the project has moved into the post production phase.
The cast will also include several actors from Indian 2. Siddharth, Kajal Aggarwal, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Bobby Simha and SJ Suryah have been confirmed to return. Their characters are expected to continue the story established in the previous film.
The return of SJ Suryah is particularly significant because his character became an important part of the conflict in Indian 2. Earlier reports had also suggested that Indian 3 would contain more material connected to his character and additional flashback portions involving Senapathy.
The technical team includes several prominent names from contemporary Tamil cinema. Anirudh Ravichander has been confirmed as the music composer, while Ravi Varman is handling cinematography. Muthuraj Thangavel is serving as production designer. The film is being produced by Subaskaran and GKM Tamil Kumaran under the Lyca Productions banner.
The decision to continue with Indian 3 comes after a period of uncertainty surrounding the project. Following Indian 2, reports suggested that the third instalment had slowed down. There were also questions about production costs, post production work and the timing of the release.
In September 2026, reports indicated that a large portion of Indian 3 had already been completed and that the remaining work involved limited shooting and extensive computer graphics. At that stage, an official confirmation from the makers was still awaited.
The latest announcement changes that situation. With post production now confirmed, the film has moved closer to completion.
Indian 3 is expected to combine the historical background of Senapathy’s family with the present-day storyline established by Indian 2. The focus on Veerasekaran Balram could provide more information about the origins of Senapathy and the experiences that shaped his beliefs.
This approach also gives Shankar an opportunity to expand the franchise beyond the events shown in the first two films. The original Indian focused heavily on Senapathy’s fight against corruption in contemporary society, while the third instalment is expected to provide greater historical context through its exploration of his father.
The continuation of the franchise is also significant for Kamal Haasan. The actor has remained closely associated with the character since the first film in 1996. His return as another version of the character’s family lineage adds a new dimension to the franchise while retaining the central theme of social justice.
For Shankar, Indian 3 represents the continuation of a project that has been in development for several years. The director had previously explained that the scale of the story led to Indian 2 and Indian 3 being treated as separate films. Much of the third instalment was therefore developed during the production of the second film.
There is currently no confirmed theatrical release date for Indian 3. Earlier reports had discussed possible release windows, but the makers have not officially announced a final date in the latest confirmation.
The film will therefore remain under post production while the team completes the remaining technical work. Given the scale of the project and its visual effects requirements, the final release schedule is expected to depend on the completion of post production.
The confirmation has nevertheless renewed interest among fans of the Indian franchise. The first film remains an important collaboration between Kamal Haasan and Shankar, while Indian 2 attempted to revive the series for a new generation.
Indian 3 now has the opportunity to build on the story already established by the first two films. With Kamal Haasan returning, Shankar directing and a substantial portion of the film already developed, the project is expected to focus on completing the remaining work before its eventual release.
For now, the key development is that Indian 3 is no longer an uncertain project. The makers have officially confirmed the film, post production has begun and the main cast and technical team have been announced.
The next major update from the production team is likely to focus on the remaining production schedule and the theatrical release date. Until then, details about the final release timing should be treated as unconfirmed.
