South Indian cinema is heading into October 2026 with a packed theatrical calendar featuring films from Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam industries. The month includes big star vehicles, action dramas, fantasy entertainers, psychological thrillers and directorial debuts. Several of these films are scheduled around the Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra periods, making October an important month for theatrical releases across the southern film industries.
The month begins with two Tamil films, Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai and Baththa, both scheduled to release on October 1, 2026. Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai is written and directed by Ram and stars Nivin Pauly, Anjali and Soori. The film combines psychological, romantic and fantasy elements and marks Nivin Pauly’s return to Tamil cinema after Richie. The movie had its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2024 and was selected for the VPRO Big Screen competition. It is now scheduled for a theatrical release on October 1.
Baththa is another Tamil release scheduled for October 1. The film stars Vijay Sethupathi and Lijomol Jose in the lead roles and is written and directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan. The project marks the third collaboration between Vijay Sethupathi and the filmmaker after their earlier work together. Ajay Ghosh is also part of the cast. October 2 brings two notable releases, Don’t Trouble The Trouble and Sigma. Fahadh Faasil stars in Don’t Trouble The Trouble, a fantasy drama directed by Shashank Yeleti. The film is presented by filmmaker S S Rajamouli and also features Ssara Palekar and Saurabh Sachdeva. The movie was initially scheduled to release on September 11 but was later postponed to October 2. It is planned for release in Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam.
The story follows Suri, a magician whose life changes after an unexpected encounter with a young girl who possesses supernatural abilities. The film combines fantasy, humour and emotional elements. The theatrical trailer has also highlighted different language versions, with Nandamuri Balakrishna providing the Telugu voice over, Mohanlal associated with the Malayalam version and Kamal Haasan providing the Tamil voice over.
Sigma is another major October 2 release. The film marks the directorial debut of Jason Sanjay and stars Sundeep Kishan and Faria Abdullah in the lead roles. Raju Sundaram, Sampath Raj, Shiv Panditt and other actors are also part of the cast. The film has been described as an action adventure heist project that combines action, comedy and treasure hunt elements. Thaman S has composed the music, while Lyca Productions is backing the project. The movie was originally scheduled for July 31 but was later moved to October 2.
Sigma has also attracted attention because of Jason Sanjay’s transition into feature film direction. The filmmaker has spoken publicly about his experience working on his first feature and the lessons he learned during the production. The film is expected to mark an important new chapter in his career as a director.
The Telugu film Aadarsha Kutumbam House No 47, also known as AK 47, is scheduled to arrive on October 9. The film stars Venkatesh Daggubati in the lead role and is written and directed by Trivikram Srinivas. Srinidhi Shetty plays the female lead, while the ensemble cast includes Nara Rohith, Nivetha Pethuraj, Yuvina Parthavi, Rao Ramesh, Satya, Brahmaji and Vennela Kishore.
The film was initially announced for an October 2 release, but the makers later postponed it by one week. Haarika and Hassine Creations confirmed that the movie will now have a worldwide theatrical release on October 9. Current cinema listings also show October 9 as the release date.
One of the biggest releases of the month is Jailer 2, which is scheduled to reach theatres on October 15. The film brings Rajinikanth back as Muthuvel Pandian in the sequel to the 2023 Tamil blockbuster Jailer. Another major release arrives the following day. Ranabaali, starring Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna, is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on October 16. Directed by Rahul Sankrityan, the film is a period action drama set against a historical backdrop. Vijay Deverakonda plays the central warrior character, while Rashmika Mandanna plays Jayamma.
Ranabaali had previously faced a delay before the makers announced October 16 as the new release date. The film is now positioned for the Dussehra period. The announcement was accompanied by a new poster featuring Vijay Deverakonda in a period warrior appearance.
The October lineup therefore covers a wide range of genres and languages.
