Rajinikanth's 1991 classic Thalapathi, directed by Mani Ratnam, is set for a grand re-release in theatres on December 12, coinciding with Rajinikanth’s 74th birthday. The gangster action drama, which has garnered a special place in Indian cinema, will be available in a newly remastered 4K version.
The film stars Rajinikanth, Mammootty, and Arvind Swamy in pivotal roles and tells the story of the powerful friendship between Rajinikanth’s and Mammootty’s characters, inspired by the mythological figures Karna and Duryodhana from the Mahabharata. It follows a courageous slum dweller who befriends a feared gangster while a district collector attempts to dismantle their bond.
Also featuring late actors Jaishankar, Amrish Puri, and Srividya, along with Bhanupriya, Shobana, and Geetha in supporting roles, Thalapathi was both a critical and commercial success at the time of its release. The film, produced by Mani Ratnam's GV Films, was known for its remarkable performances, powerful narrative, and its unforgettable music by Ilaiyaraaja. Notably, Thalapathi marked Ilaiyaraaja’s last collaboration with Mani Ratnam and continues to be celebrated for its soulful background score.
The film's stunning cinematography by Santosh Sivan helped elevate its gripping storytelling. With Thalapathi being regarded as one of the most expensive South Indian films of its time, the re-release of this cinematic gem is expected to reignite nostalgia among fans and introduce it to new generations.
