Indian Air Force Conducts Aerial Firefighting Operations in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland

By deploying aircraft and trained personnel to challenging environments, the Indian Air Force contributes to safeguarding both ecological assets and civilian safety.

The Indian Air Force has launched extensive aerial firefighting operations in the northeastern region as wildfires continue to affect forested areas in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. The operations are being conducted simultaneously on two fronts, highlighting the scale of the response and the urgency of containing the spreading flames.

According to an official statement shared by the Indian Air Force on X, helicopters have been deployed for sustained water dropping missions to control the fires. In Walong, Arunachal Pradesh, the Air Force reported that a total of 139800 litres of water was dropped, successfully extinguishing the blaze in the affected area. The swift response helped prevent further spread of the fire in the forest region.

At the same time, operations are ongoing over Dzukou Valley in Nagaland, a region known for its ecological significance and difficult terrain. Mi 17 V5 helicopters are drawing water from Padumpokhiri Lake in Dimapur to combat fires reported near Japfu Peak. The challenging topography, combined with steep slopes and low visibility, has made aerial operations complex.

Defence officials indicated that flying in rarefied air conditions in high altitude regions requires precise coordination and experienced pilots. The Mi 17 V5 helicopters are equipped for such missions and have been deployed in disaster relief and emergency response operations across the country in the past.

Wildfires in the northeastern region often pose serious risks to biodiversity, local communities and forest ecosystems. Rapid response is essential to prevent environmental damage and ensure the safety of nearby settlements. The deployment of the Indian Air Force reflects coordinated efforts between civil authorities and defence forces to manage the situation effectively.

The IAF has previously assisted in firefighting efforts during natural disasters and emergencies, using aerial platforms to access remote and inaccessible areas. In mountainous terrain where ground based firefighting is difficult, helicopter borne water drops can significantly slow or extinguish advancing flames.

Officials have stated that the operations will continue as required until the situation is fully under control. Monitoring of affected areas is being carried out in coordination with state authorities and disaster management agencies.

The current firefighting mission demonstrates the role of the armed forces in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations. By deploying aircraft and trained personnel to challenging environments, the Indian Air Force contributes to safeguarding both ecological assets and civilian safety.

Further updates are expected as authorities assess the situation and confirm the containment of the fires in both states.
