Ahmedabad – In an effort to support the students enrolled in its schools, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has announced that it will provide shoes and socks to 1.7 lakh students in schools run by the Ahmedabad Municipal School Board (AMSB) starting from the next academic session. This decision was approved by the standing committee of AMC during their meeting on Thursday.
The civic body aims to address the challenges faced by economically disadvantaged students, many of whom lack proper footwear. To ensure all students have access to shoes and socks, the AMC has allocated a budget of Rs 5 crore. The move is in line with the corporation's ongoing efforts to improve student welfare and contribute to better health and learning environments.
In addition to footwear, the new academic term will also introduce milk distribution for these students, as part of a broader initiative to enhance the nutritional intake of schoolchildren. For this purpose, the standing committee has set aside Rs 2.5 crore for the nutritional supplements.
AMC standing committee chairman Devang Dani noted that most of the students enrolled in AMC-run schools come from economically weaker sections. He emphasized that the distribution of shoes, socks, and milk will have a positive impact on the students’ overall well-being and performance in school.
The Ahmedabad Municipal School Board manages 450 schools in the city, with a total student enrollment of 1.7 lakh. This initiative is a significant step toward uplifting the educational experience for children who may otherwise lack basic resources for daily school life.
In the same meeting, updates were provided on the construction of the Pallav Junction flyover in Naranpura, which is expected to be completed by April 2025.
This move by the AMC marks an important step towards improving the educational infrastructure and welfare of children in Ahmedabad, ensuring they have the necessary tools for success.
