The drainage system needs a permanent upgrade,” said a shopkeeper from the Amreli main market area.

Amreli, Gujarat:

Heavy rains lashed several parts of Amreli district in Gujarat on Sunday, leading to severe waterlogging and flooding in low-lying areas. The continuous rainfall, which began early in the morning, has brought normal life to a standstill. Residents reported difficulties commuting as key roads were submerged under several inches of water, and local transportation services were disrupted.

According to data from the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), Amreli city and nearby talukas received over 100 mm of rainfall within 12 hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for moderate to heavy rain across parts of Saurashtra and South Gujarat for the next 24 hours. The department attributed the rainfall activity to a low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea, which has intensified moisture inflow into the region.

Local authorities have initiated relief measures in the worst-affected zones. The Amreli district administration has set up control rooms to respond to emergency calls and coordinate rescue operations. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are on standby. Officials have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay indoors during the heavy downpour.

Several villages near Lathi and Savarkundla reported overflowing drains and rising water levels in local ponds. Agricultural fields in certain areas were submerged, raising concerns among farmers about potential crop damage. The district irrigation department is closely monitoring water flow in local rivers and reservoirs to prevent breaches.

Electricity supply in parts of Amreli town was temporarily disrupted due to safety concerns. Power companies have stated that restoration work is underway and that priority is being given to hospitals and essential service areas. The Amreli municipality has also deployed additional staff for drainage clearance to ensure smooth outflow of rainwater.

Local residents expressed frustration over recurring flooding during monsoon seasons. “Every year, we face the same problem when it rains heavily. The drainage system needs a permanent upgrade,” said a shopkeeper from the Amreli main market area.

Meteorologists expect rainfall intensity to gradually decrease by Tuesday, though intermittent showers may continue through the week. The IMD has advised fishermen along the Saurashtra coast to avoid venturing into the sea due to strong winds and rough conditions.

The Gujarat government has assured that all precautionary steps are being taken to handle any emergency. Citizens have been requested to follow updates issued by the weather department and district administration through official channels.

As Amreli deals with the aftermath of the heavy rains, authorities remain vigilant to prevent any major flooding or loss of life.
