Gambhira Bridge Slab Collapses in Gujarat, Drone Footage Reveals Structural Failure

He added that priority would be given to routes with high daily traffic and those connecting critical services like hospitals and markets.

A portion of the Gambhira Bridge in Gujarat suffered a significant structural failure, causing an entire slab between two piers to collapse into the river beneath. The incident occurred unexpectedly, leading to immediate concerns regarding the safety of bridge infrastructure in the state. Fortunately, no loss of life or injury was reported, as the collapse happened during a period of low traffic.

Drone footage captured shortly after the collapse shows a gaping void where the bridge deck once connected two concrete piers. The slab, which had supported vehicular movement across the river, is now submerged, clearly indicating a complete failure in the structural support. Visual evidence of cracked concrete and misaligned beams has intensified questions about the quality of construction and regular maintenance practices.

The bridge, which connects several rural communities and serves as a key route for daily transportation and goods movement, has now been closed to the public. Local police and disaster response teams have secured the area to prevent any further incidents. Divers and engineers were seen inspecting the submerged section and surrounding structure to assess further risk.

State government officials have ordered an inquiry into the cause of the collapse. Initial reports suggest that aging infrastructure, combined with recent monsoon rains, may have weakened the support system. However, some experts believe poor construction quality or a lack of timely maintenance could be contributing factors.

Gujarat’s Road and Buildings Department has begun a preliminary technical review and is expected to submit a detailed report within a few days. A senior official stated that all bridges of similar age and design across the state will undergo immediate inspection. He added that priority would be given to routes with high daily traffic and those connecting critical services like hospitals and markets.

Opposition parties have criticized the state government, accusing it of negligence and poor oversight of infrastructure projects. They have demanded accountability from contractors and engineers associated with the original construction and questioned the lack of a comprehensive bridge audit system.

Local residents, many of whom rely on the bridge for daily commuting, expressed frustration and fear. “We cross this bridge every day to go to school, work, and markets. This could have been a tragedy if it had happened during busy hours,” said one commuter from a nearby village.

Infrastructure experts have pointed out that many bridges in India, particularly in semi-urban and rural areas, are not regularly evaluated for wear and stress. They advocate for the adoption of modern bridge monitoring technologies and stricter regulatory oversight.

As Gujarat authorities respond to the crisis, the Gambhira Bridge collapse has sparked a broader discussion on the state of public infrastructure across India. The incident underscores the urgent need for preventive maintenance, accountability, and transparency in infrastructure development to ensure public safety.

This could have been a tragedy if it had happened during busy hours,” said one commuter from a nearby village.
