Bhavnagar, Gujarat:
Heavy rainfall lashed Bhavnagar district in Gujarat on Sunday, leading to widespread waterlogging and traffic disruptions across the city. The continuous downpour, which began early in the morning, inundated several residential and commercial areas, affecting the daily routine of thousands of residents.
According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), Bhavnagar city recorded more than 120 millimeters of rainfall within 12 hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast indicating moderate to heavy rainfall across the Saurashtra region, including Bhavnagar, Amreli, and Junagadh, in the next 24 hours. Officials have attributed the heavy showers to a low-pressure system forming over the Arabian Sea, which is drawing moisture into coastal Gujarat.
Local authorities have activated control rooms to monitor the situation and provide timely assistance to residents. Municipal workers have been deployed to clear blocked drainage lines in several parts of the city, including areas near Ghogha Road, Sanskar Mandal, and Botad Highway. Emergency response teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the fire department are on standby to assist in case of rising water levels or stranded individuals.
Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation officials confirmed that the waterlogging affected key traffic routes, leading to slow vehicular movement throughout the day. Several schools and shops remained closed due to the inclement weather. Power supply was temporarily disrupted in certain localities as a safety measure, but restoration work began soon after rainfall intensity reduced.
Residents from low-lying neighborhoods expressed concern about inadequate drainage infrastructure. “Every year during monsoon, heavy rains cause severe flooding in our area. The civic body needs to improve drainage and stormwater systems,” said a local resident from the Sardarnagar area.
Meanwhile, agricultural lands in nearby rural areas have also been affected, with reports of standing water in fields of cotton and groundnut crops. Farmers fear potential damage if heavy rainfall continues for another day. Officials from the agriculture department have assured that assessment teams will be deployed to evaluate crop conditions once the rain subsides.
Meteorologists have advised residents to remain cautious over the next 24 hours, as intermittent rainfall is likely to continue. Fishermen along the Saurashtra coast have been warned against venturing into the sea due to rough weather conditions and strong winds.
District Collector Dr. Yogesh Patel stated that the administration is maintaining close coordination with local authorities and the meteorological department. “Our teams are on alert, and all necessary precautions have been taken to ensure public safety. We urge citizens to follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel,” he said.
As Bhavnagar continues to experience heavy rainfall, officials remain vigilant to prevent further flooding and ensure quick response to emergencies. The government has reiterated its commitment to providing timely relief and maintaining essential services during the ongoing monsoon activity.
