The devastating 2001 Bhuj earthquake, which claimed thousands of lives, remains a vivid memory for the residents.

A medium-intensity earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale struck the Kachchh district of Gujarat at approximately 11:26 PM on Tuesday night, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremor, though brief, was felt in parts of Bhachau, Bhuj, and surrounding towns, causing momentary alarm among residents.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located near Bhachau in Kachchh, at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers. The tremors lasted for a few seconds but were strong enough to be captured on CCTV footage from shops and public places. The visuals show minor shaking of furniture and hanging items, with some residents quickly moving to open areas as a precaution.

No injuries or major structural damage have been reported so far. However, local authorities have initiated a survey to assess any hidden or minor damages to buildings, especially in older residential areas. Emergency response teams have been kept on alert, although their services have not been required as of now.

District Collector of Kachchh, Dr. Amit Patel, stated, “Our teams are in contact with gram panchayats and local authorities. So far, there is no report of significant damage or injury. We are closely monitoring the situation and will issue advisories if needed.”

Gujarat, particularly the Kachchh region, is known for its seismic activity. The area falls under seismic zone V, the highest risk zone in India. The devastating 2001 Bhuj earthquake, which claimed thousands of lives, remains a vivid memory for the residents. As a result, even moderate tremors tend to trigger heightened alertness and swift public reactions.

Seismologists have indicated that Tuesday night’s tremor is likely part of the region’s natural seismic activity. While there is no indication of a larger quake to follow, citizens are advised to remain cautious and prepared.

Safety measures such as avoiding panic, staying away from weak structures, and being aware of exit routes are being circulated by local disaster management units. Schools and colleges in the region have also been asked to review their emergency response protocols.

As a precaution, the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) is expected to conduct awareness campaigns in vulnerable areas over the coming days.

Residents are urged to follow updates from verified sources and contact the local helpline in case of emergencies or aftershocks.
