Congress Calls for Immediate Government Assistance to Struggling Diamond Artisans

The Congress Party has raised serious concerns regarding the plight of diamond artisans in India, particularly those working in cities like Surat and Mumbai, who are grappling with severe financial struggles. The party has urged the central government to take immediate action and provide necessary financial aid, social security, and work opportunities to these skilled workers.

The diamond industry, known for its significant contribution to India’s economy, is facing a major slowdown. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated the situation, with many artisans reporting loss of income due to a decline in demand for diamond jewelry and the disruption of global supply chains.

Diamond artisans, who have been pivotal in shaping India’s global reputation as a leader in diamond cutting and polishing, are now struggling to make ends meet. According to sources, many of them have had to either drastically reduce their working hours or shut down their small workshops due to the lack of work.

In a statement, Congress leaders expressed concern over the lack of government support for these artisans, many of whom come from marginalized communities. "These artisans have contributed significantly to India's diamond industry. It's time for the government to stand by them and provide them with the assistance they desperately need," said a Congress spokesperson.

The party has specifically called for:

  1. Financial Assistance: Immediate financial support for artisans facing loss of livelihood.
  2. Skill Development Programs: Initiatives to help artisans upgrade their skills and diversify into other forms of craftsmanship.
  3. Health and Welfare Support: Providing health insurance and other welfare benefits to ensure the well-being of artisans and their families.
  4. Revival of the Diamond Market: Measures to rejuvenate the diamond industry and increase demand for handcrafted jewelry.

The Congress Party has also suggested that the government explore opportunities for promoting the ‘Made in India’ brand, particularly focusing on the traditional craftsmanship of diamond artisans, as a way to boost exports and create new job opportunities.

As the global diamond market recovers from the pandemic’s aftermath, the party believes that with the right support, India's diamond artisans can return to their former glory and contribute to the country’s economic recovery.

The party has urged the central government to take immediate action and provide necessary financial aid, social security, and work opportunities to these skilled workers.
