Somnath, Gujarat: President Droupadi Murmu offered prayers at the historic Somnath Temple in Gujarat on Saturday morning as part of her official visit to the state. The visit marked a moment of spiritual significance as the President paid homage at one of the most sacred shrines of Lord Shiva, located on the western coast of India.
The President reached the temple amid tight security arrangements and was received by the Somnath Temple Trust officials and senior priests. She was welcomed with traditional rituals before proceeding to the sanctum sanctorum, where she offered flowers and performed a brief puja.
According to temple authorities, President Murmu was briefed about the temple’s history, its architectural grandeur, and its cultural relevance. Built in the Chalukya style of architecture, the Somnath Temple holds immense importance in Hindu tradition as the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The temple, which has been rebuilt several times over centuries, stands as a symbol of resilience and devotion.
Officials said that after the prayer ceremony, President Murmu interacted briefly with members of the Somnath Temple Trust. The trustees expressed their gratitude for her visit and presented her with a memento symbolizing the temple’s legacy.
Heavy security deployment was seen in and around the temple premises during the President’s visit. Local police and special protection units ensured smooth arrangements for devotees while maintaining restricted access to certain areas. Visitors who were present at the temple during the morning hours said they were honored to witness the President’s presence.
This visit is part of President Murmu’s two-day tour of Gujarat, where she is scheduled to attend several official programmes, including meetings with state leaders, educational institutions, and social welfare organizations. Later in the day, the President is expected to participate in a cultural event highlighting Gujarat’s heritage and community development initiatives.
The Somnath Temple has long been a center of religious and cultural tourism in Gujarat, attracting millions of devotees and visitors from across India and abroad every year. Managed by the Shree Somnath Trust, the temple complex is also known for its scenic coastal surroundings and historical significance.
In recent years, the temple has been the site of several visits by national leaders, reinforcing its prominence in India’s spiritual and cultural landscape. President Murmu’s visit continues this tradition, reflecting the deep connection between the nation’s leadership and its heritage sites.
Authorities have advised pilgrims visiting Somnath over the weekend to follow the standard guidelines issued by temple management and local administration, especially given the increased footfall and security arrangements during the President’s tour.
