INDIA Bloc to Hold Bengaluru Protest on November 5, Demands CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation
The INDIA bloc has announced a protest in Bengaluru on November 5 against the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The opposition alliance will also demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging concerns over the functioning of the Election Commission and the voter list revision process.
The demonstration will take place at Freedom Park in Bengaluru. The announcement was made on November 3 by Karnataka Congress chief B K Hariprasad during a press conference at the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee office. Leaders from several INDIA bloc parties attended the meeting and outlined their plans to expand the campaign across Karnataka.
Protest Planned at Freedom Park
According to the announcement, the November 5 demonstration will bring together leaders and members of the INDIA bloc’s constituent parties. The protest will focus on the Special Intensive Revision process and the alliance’s demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Hariprasad said the Bengaluru demonstration would be a continuation of the opposition alliance’s protest held at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi on November 1. During that demonstration, opposition leaders raised objections to the electoral roll revision exercise and questioned the functioning of the Election Commission.
The INDIA bloc has maintained that electoral processes must protect the voting rights of all eligible citizens. Its leaders have expressed concerns about possible errors and the removal of eligible voters’ names during the revision exercise. These concerns and allegations are part of the opposition’s campaign, while the Election Commission’s procedures and official records remain important for assessing individual cases.
INDIA Bloc Plans Statewide Agitation
The opposition alliance has decided to take its campaign beyond Bengaluru. Hariprasad said the movement would initially begin with a state-level demonstration in the Karnataka capital, followed by protests at district and taluk levels.
The plan is intended to involve political workers and supporters across different parts of the state. The INDIA bloc leaders believe that taking the campaign to local levels will help bring their concerns about electoral rolls and voting rights to a wider audience.
The alliance has also indicated that its agitation will continue until its demand for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation is addressed. Hariprasad alleged that constitutional institutions were being misused to weaken democratic processes. These remarks represent the opposition alliance’s political position on the issue.
Opposition Lists Key Demands
CPI(M) Karnataka state secretary K Prakash outlined several demands during the press conference. These include scrapping the Special Intensive Revision exercise, seeking the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and making the process of appointing the CEC more democratic.
Prakash said the appointment process should follow the directions of the Supreme Court. He also called for the withdrawal of the law that grants permanent immunity to the Chief Election Commissioner.
The INDIA bloc has argued that the Election Commission must function independently and maintain public confidence in the electoral process. The alliance wants its concerns about the revision of voter lists to be addressed and is using public demonstrations to press for changes.
The demands are expected to remain central to the Bengaluru protest and the subsequent demonstrations planned across Karnataka.
Leaders From Multiple Parties Participate
Representatives of several INDIA bloc constituents attended the press conference at the KPCC office. Those present included CPI(M) state secretary K Prakash, CPI leader Saathi Sundaresh, Forward Bloc representatives Mahantesh Shivashankar and Ali, and CPI(ML) leader Clifton D’Rozario.
The participation of leaders from different opposition parties reflects the alliance’s effort to coordinate its campaign on the SIR issue. The parties have indicated that they will work together in organising demonstrations at the state, district and taluk levels.
The proposed campaign is not limited to a single public meeting. The alliance intends to maintain pressure through a series of protests and public mobilisation activities across Karnataka.
Background to the Delhi Protest
The Bengaluru announcement follows the INDIA bloc’s demonstration at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi on November 1. Opposition leaders and supporters gathered there to protest against the SIR exercise and demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The Delhi demonstration brought together leaders from several opposition parties. They raised questions about the revision of electoral rolls and called for greater accountability in the conduct of elections.
The INDIA bloc has since decided to extend the campaign to other parts of the country. The November 5 protest in Bengaluru is one of the next steps in that effort, with Karnataka leaders planning further demonstrations at local levels.
What Happens Next?
The INDIA bloc is preparing for the November 5 protest at Freedom Park, after which the alliance plans to organise demonstrations across Karnataka’s districts and taluks. The scale of participation and the response from the Election Commission and other authorities will be important developments to watch.
The central issues in the campaign are the SIR exercise, the protection of eligible voters’ names on electoral rolls, the demand for the CEC’s resignation and changes to the appointment process for the head of the Election Commission.
The November 5 demonstration is expected to extend the opposition’s campaign from Delhi to Karnataka. However, the allegations raised by political parties should be distinguished from established findings. The accuracy of electoral records and the fairness of the revision process need to be assessed through official information and verifiable evidence.
For now, the INDIA bloc has made clear that it intends to continue its protests and expand its mobilisation across Karnataka.
