Heavy rain lashed several parts of Navi Mumbai and surrounding areas on Friday, bringing relief from the heat but also causing waterlogging and slow traffic movement in parts of the city, particularly Panvel. The downpour began early in the morning and continued intermittently through the day, affecting routine activities and leading to congested roads during peak hours.
Visuals from Panvel showed rainwater collecting on several stretches, with vehicles wading through knee-deep water in some locations. Local residents reported that areas such as Kalamboli, Kamothe, Kharghar, and Old Panvel faced brief flooding due to inadequate drainage and the high volume of rain in a short period.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Navi Mumbai and adjoining regions are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall over the next two days. The weather department attributed the showers to a low-pressure system developing over the Arabian Sea, which has been bringing moisture-laden winds toward the Konkan coast.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) deployed emergency response teams to clear blocked drains and manage traffic flow. Officials stated that water pumps were activated in several low-lying areas to prevent further accumulation of rainwater.
Commuters traveling on major routes, including the Sion-Panvel Highway and Mumbai-Goa Highway, experienced delays due to slow-moving traffic and minor accidents caused by slippery road conditions. Train services between Belapur and Panvel also faced brief delays in the afternoon because of signal interruptions.
A spokesperson from the municipal corporation said, “Our teams are continuously monitoring flood-prone areas. Citizens are advised to stay indoors during heavy rainfall and avoid venturing into waterlogged zones.” Emergency helplines have been made operational to assist residents in case of any inconvenience.
Local residents expressed concern over recurring waterlogging during the monsoon season, calling for long-term drainage improvement projects. Many areas of Navi Mumbai, especially Panvel and Kamothe, have experienced similar issues in previous years due to rapid urbanization and limited stormwater infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the IMD has urged citizens to stay alert as more rainfall is expected in the coming days, with a yellow alert issued for parts of the Raigad and Thane districts. The department also cautioned fishermen against venturing into the sea due to strong winds and rough conditions along the coast.
While the rain provided a much-needed respite from the recent dry spell, it also highlighted the city’s persistent infrastructure challenges during the monsoon period. Authorities have assured that all precautionary measures are being implemented to ensure public safety and minimize disruptions in essential services.
Residents are encouraged to follow updates from the municipal corporations and the IMD for the latest weather advisories and traffic alerts as the region continues to experience fluctuating monsoon conditions.
