Maharashtra, June 14 – Several parts of Maharashtra, including Pune district's Pimpri-Chinchwad and major areas of Mumbai, experienced intense rainfall and thunderstorms on Friday, leading to traffic snarls, waterlogging, and temporary disruptions to daily life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued a yellow alert for parts of Maharashtra, which turned accurate as rains swept across key regions.
In Pimpri-Chinchwad, located within the Pune metropolitan region, heavy showers started early in the morning and continued through the day. Thunderstorms, strong winds, and lightning accompanied the rain, resulting in power cuts in some localities and slowing down vehicular movement on major roads. Low-lying areas witnessed water accumulation, while local authorities deployed emergency teams to monitor and clear blocked drains.
Meanwhile, in Mumbai, dark clouds blanketed the city by afternoon, with visuals from the iconic Bandra-Worli Sea Link showing a completely overcast sky and misty conditions. The city’s signature skyline was hidden behind thick clouds, creating both concern and awe among residents. Although Mumbai witnessed comparatively less rainfall than Pune, the cloud cover and intermittent showers disrupted normal routines.
Commuters in both cities reported delays and longer travel times due to waterlogged roads and reduced visibility. Local train services, a lifeline of Mumbai, continued with minor delays in some sectors. Municipal authorities advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and take precautions against lightning and waterborne diseases.
The IMD has predicted continued rainfall across Mumbai, Thane, Pune, and surrounding areas for the next 48 hours. Officials said the monsoon has advanced steadily across Maharashtra, and more rainfall activity is expected in the coming days. Schools in certain rain-affected pockets were asked to close early or conduct online classes for the day.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has activated its disaster management teams, while the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is coordinating with local police and fire departments to address emergencies. Helplines have been set up for residents in case of flooding or power outages.
Health authorities have also advised citizens to consume clean drinking water and avoid walking through flooded streets to prevent infections. Regular monitoring of rainfall and water levels in rivers and lakes is underway.
This spell of heavy rain marks one of the first significant monsoon activities in the state for 2025. Both Pune and Mumbai residents are advised to follow weather updates and take appropriate precautions.
Authorities continue to stay on high alert as the southwest monsoon establishes its presence in the region.
