The historic 154-year-old Carnac Bridge in Mumbai, located near Masjid Bunder Railway Station, is undergoing a crucial reconstruction to enhance safety and traffic flow. Originally built in 1867, the bridge connects P D'Mello Road and plays a vital role in alleviating congestion around Masjid Bunder, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, and Mohammad Ali Marg.

The reconstruction project gained momentum after experts from IIT Bombay declared the bridge unsafe in 2018, prompting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to take immediate action. Recently, BMC completed a significant milestone with the installation of a 516-metric-ton iron girder on the south side of the railway section, marking substantial progress in the project.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar visited the site and confirmed that 83% of the iron girder materials for the north side have been delivered. The remaining components are expected by December 20, and assembly is scheduled for completion by January 13. The BMC has also requested a railway block from Central Railway on January 18 and 19 for the girder installation, which will be followed by a trial run on January 14.

The BMC expects the bridge to be ready for traffic by June 5, 2025, contingent on meeting all project deadlines. The reconstruction will occur in stages, starting with the pile foundation for the approach roads, expected to be finished by March 15. Pile erection will follow by April 17, and the concreting of the approach roads is set for completion by May 3. A load test to verify the bridge’s safety will be conducted on June 1.

The timely installation of anti-crash barriers and electricity poles, along with cooperation from Central Railway, is crucial for meeting the June deadline. Once completed, the revamped Carnac Bridge will significantly improve connectivity and safety in south Mumbai, marking a critical infrastructure upgrade for the city.
