A political controversy has erupted in Maharashtra after a video surfaced showing a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction allegedly assaulting a canteen worker over claims of being served stale food. The incident, which occurred inside a government premises, has drawn sharp criticism from across the political spectrum and from civil society groups.
The MLA in question is seen in the video confronting the canteen worker and reportedly slapping him during a heated exchange. According to eyewitnesses, the altercation began when the legislator accused the canteen staff of serving food that was not fresh. The worker, reportedly employed under a government catering contract, attempted to explain the situation, but the confrontation escalated.
What has further intensified public reaction is the MLA’s subsequent justification of the act. When questioned by journalists, he responded that it was “his style” of dealing with such situations, a remark that has since gone viral and been widely condemned.
The video and the MLA's remarks have sparked widespread outrage on social media and in political circles. Human rights activists and opposition parties have called the act a blatant misuse of power and an example of unacceptable behavior by an elected representative. Leaders from the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have demanded an official inquiry and appropriate disciplinary action.
Several senior political figures have expressed concern over the message such actions send to the public. “Elected officials are expected to lead by example, not intimidate or assault common citizens. Justifying violence undermines the values of democracy and rule of law,” said a former state minister.
Legal experts have also weighed in, stating that physical assault, regardless of the reason, constitutes a punishable offense under Indian law. The canteen worker, according to initial reports, has not yet filed a formal complaint, possibly due to fear of retaliation. Civil liberties organizations have offered legal support to the worker if he chooses to pursue legal action.
The Shiv Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde has not issued an official statement on the matter as of now. Party insiders suggest that discussions are underway about how to manage the fallout. Meanwhile, the state government has come under pressure to demonstrate accountability and uphold standards of public conduct.
The incident has sparked a broader debate on the conduct of public representatives and the culture of impunity that sometimes surrounds them. Critics argue that even minor infractions by politicians are often overlooked unless there is public outrage or media attention.
As the issue gains momentum, it remains to be seen whether the MLA in question will face disciplinary action from his party or legal consequences under existing laws. For many observers, the case represents a test of the political establishment’s commitment to upholding justice and setting standards for public behavior.
